I want to know what kind of additives are good to use on Qs. I went to advance auto parts, and they had all kinds of different additives; anything from radiator cleaners to transmission additives. What are the best ones (in their effectiveness) that you can buy, for any part of the car.

Ive seen some of these transmisison additives, do they work. Let me know what youve tried and if it made a difference at all.

Search posts for MOA and Lubeguard.

Only ones I can remember endorsed by more than one member, other than fresh fluids.

Don't forget Redline Water Wetter, BG 44K and MMO.

True about Redline and MMO. Think of Techron and BG 44K as consumables more than additives, but you're right.

Do any of the transmission additives that are supposed to say they stop slippage actually help?

Some swell the leaky internal seals which may raise the shift pressure a little for a short time. But lots of the total leaks are caused by metal wear around pump vanes and cylinder bores and pistons in the valve body.

Most slipping is from the friction material just wearing off or high temperatures breaking down the glue that holds it on the metal.

Lubeguard [slightly] increases slipping [as designed to improve shift feel] and contains things [sythetic copy of sperm whale oil] that tend to lower the stress on gear meshes.

Wes,

Lucas is motor oil additive=no good.I know nothing about their transmission treatment.Did you do any of the things we advised in that other thread?

There are some additves out there from B&M for performace applications some thicken the ATF enough to possibly raise the pressure enought t help your slippage some. Some transmission additives advertise seal swellers, you might try those as well.

No, I havent done that pressure check :( yet..... Ill have them do it the next time I get it serviced (coming up soon), because i will be doing the shocks, and maybe something else at the same time.

Would a clogged filter cause the pressure check to come out bad, in which case the remedy could be just replacing the filter?

Yes it would, so would a clogged lineThe remedy <could> be to replace the filter ,or line, ( for chump change), IF you take the car in for a check the very first time you detect <any> slippage!Thats, why I said to take in in ASAP, when we talked about this 2 weeks ago.ASAP means today or tommorow but no later!!!!!!!

Because, low pressure (for which ever reason) can destroy your transmission in a few days.

Even if the seals had been bad, that still would have been a cheap fix, compared to ruining the planteary and clutch by running with low pressure.

Wes, it is possible, you went from cheap fix, to new transmission, in the time since you started the last thread on this subject.

transmission chatted to death on NICO. Oh, the agony!

Reading the past posts, especially Q45tech, should be mandatory for all newbies to the board. Shouldn't even be allowed to turn the motor on until they have finished if they drive 1990-1993 Q45s.

Good point, Brian.

Wes, go change your transmission fluid and filter NOW! Don't come back until it's done and you have a good "DIY Q maintenance" story for us!

THAT'S AN ORDER, SOLDIER!! :D

Also, if its going to cost an arm and a leg to fix it, Im gonna wait until it dies, since I have an extended warranty that covers "transmission, case and all internal parts, torque converter and housing"

Wes,I am glad to hear it has a warranty:)Bad presssures should be enough for the warranty company to authoirze action sinc ethey might be saving themselves a lot of money.transmission fluid: no need to change it if its this recent. If the filter hasn't been recently changed, do that and have those line pressures checked.and find out WHY your trranny slips.Take it to a place u trust (if u have one) they should tell u whats up.

Ill try and do it tomorrow, and actually I am getting the warranty this weekend, because I cant get out of work to go get it. :( :<Its probably something more serious, it has been doing it for a while, but i just recently noticed it as slippage and not as its natural smoothness :D

Did they drop the pan and change the screen? How many miles without a pan drop and flush combination service?

Brian,I am going to the dealer this weekend (who did the flush before I got it, he drove it for a few months and replaced the fuel pump and transmission flush), and I will find out of they changed the filter. If not, I will take it in (or DIY) right away.
