When I got my used car, it sadly only came with a single key/fob. I want to get two more. From what I've read, I can order the FOBs with uncut keys on Amazon/eBay or similar and take them and the car to the dealer to have them programmed and have any lock smith cut the key.

Is this understanding correct? Anybody know how much the dealer charges for this?

Yes. I believe it's an hours labor (~$80) at the dealer, but don't quote me on that.

1. Might be cheaper at a Nissan dealer
2. Some locksmiths have the ability to program intelligent keys - could me make specific (they would need a Consult 3/4 with the key programming module) or some other fancy computer set up to do it, though. But, advantage is one stop shopping: physical key can be cut and the intellikey programmed.

You are correct. You can buy the key online and have it programmed at at dealer. The Infiniti dealership I use charged me $65 to program. I still need to get the key cut, though. When buying your key make sure the FCC ID on the one you're buying is the same as they key you own, or they won't be able to program it. You can find the code once you slide out the key.

How much does it cost to buy a new key online? Anyone have a range?

The dealer will likely be able to provide an extra fob for you, program it, and cut the metal key as well. However, it will cost you a bloody fortune. When my windows were tinted, they left my fob on the roof of the car when they called me out to drive it away. I was told that the fob was in the console. I drove it onto the road and the fob rolled off the roof and into the street. Then the "NO KEY" light came on. I did a U-turn back to the shop and their mistake was discovered. The fob was found in the road, crushed by a following vehicle. They sent me to a locksmith to get a new fob at their expense.
The locksmith had to program three different "matching" fobs before he found one that would actually work. I would hate to have to return 3 different keys back to an Ebay seller just to find one that really works on my car.
That is why I don't recommend buying a fob online. Perhaps it took three different fobs because of the locksmith and not because of the actual fob, but if you buy online and this happens, you have to keep returning fobs through the mail until you get the fob that actually will work reliably.
