I am not much of a shopper but my girlfriend is and she has a newer car That has one of those fancy/lazy guys Trunk where with a click of a button the trunk opens all the way up with out you have to add any effort. (Useful when she comes out with 20 bags and you don't want to get out of the car).

But can I just go to the junk yard and grab some lift gate or glass lift shocks and add them to the to the trunk?

The main question is mounting.

Or would it be easier to add a little actuator where the trunk meets the top of the bumper?

Grow legs and open the trunk?

You could drill some holes and mount shocks on the trunk. Just make sure you do it well.

Reminds me of those abominable power trunk closers on '80s and '90s GMs.

Auto parts and hardware stores carry hood struts. The trunk still won't lift by itself with just the struts, though...they'll just hold it up. You'd need something motorized or powered to make it open all the way automatically. Otherwise hoods that use struts would bend and distort. The struts don't assist until the lid is partially open.I imagine your girlfriend's automatic trunk is actually powered. What kind of car is it?

Newer Nissan's have a more compact hinge system that uses hydraulic struts from the factory (and lacks the gigantic elbow arms older torsion-lift trunks have). It doesn't lift the trunk entirely on it's own, but does assist (and goes on it's own above a certain point). It's more complex than just struts, though; it's a sort of crossed scissor hinge that kind of rotates the trunk lid up rather than just pushing. Very compact, though: it all sits alongside the rubber weather stripping that seals the top side of the lid.

You don't need struts, just more powerful springs. Think torsion bars. How do you increase their spring rate? Hmmmmm.........

that a smart thought, i never gave it the time, i hunted for 5 years to finally get the springs from the T model to hold up my lid. i did not visibly see a difference betwrrn the standard and T springs though.

But when i put aftermarket struts on the M30 trunk, it would pop open all the way.

The spring set (Torsion bars) on any G50 with a spoiler is a lot stiffer than the set on a base model (without spoiler). If you've added a spoiler to your Q and didn't upgrade the trunk springs it would explain why the trunk is not staying open.

If your Q doesn't have a spoiler and the trunk is not staying open then something has come loose. The torsion bar set is pretty stout so I can't imagine it breaking. Compare yours to the Q your parting out and consider swapping in the used one if it looks to be working properly.

Eureka I found it!!!

I think I can use F50 (2002-2006 Q45) trunk shocks on a G50 (1990-1996 Q45). This will solve a problem when I find another GF and I can also add a spoiler with out worry I think.

I looked extensively at the 2006 Q45 service manual and I see there are only trunk shocks and no torsion bars. So that means these trunk shocks are really powerful.

But I am perplexed because Burtman Industries offers a Q45 (http://www.burtmanindustries.c...k_kit) So Burt if you see this topic please let me know whats included in your kit.

Any F50 Q45 owners please feel free to post what ever you want EXCEPT OF MCREWS!!!

I looked at a Q in the pull-a-part today and noticed that there are two positions on each side that hold the torsion spring ends. I suspect that the springs are the same between the spoiler and non-spoiler models, and they are just put in different positions. I have no idea how to safely move them to experiment with them - but someone (Paul ) on this board may have more time than I do.

On a sad side note, I discovered first hand how easy it is to break in to the trunk. Took about 10 seconds with a common screw driver. This particular Q had a closed trunk and no keys available...
