adding oil squirters to SOHC block - possible?

I don't really know much about motor internals like this, im about to start rebuilding my turbo SOHC, and I was wondering if anyone could basically break down why or why not it would be possible to install squirters in the SOHC block? I'll admit I don't really even know how they work, I think they're mechanical? Oil drawn up by the motion of the piston/rod? I dont know. Im sure theres a good link or something someone knows.

Yes you can get them installed in a sohc block. What needs to be done is mill work to the underside of the block. The oil passage runs in the exact same location, the block needs to be milled (spot faced) and then drilled/tapped to the appropriate thread size depending on what squirters you are using. This isnt something that is commonly done so you wont find much info on it. I have done this on a 82 datsun z series block and is the first time i have spoke of it online.

It would be best to have a dohc donor block which to get the squirters, and to bring into machine shop to show them what needs to be done.

Other squirters can work to, some from late model toyota engines come to mind.

If I took it to a machine shop with a donor DOHC block, the squirters off them, and said "put these on here like this" would they be able to take it from there? Just a couple holes and some tapping and installation? Are there specific angles they need to be placed at, or aimed at?

We could take this to email ([email protected]), or AIM (tokih2o), or keep it going here for others reference. I'de like to talk to you further about this.

They will be able to determine all angles and position of the squirters by simply referencing the dohc block. They may or may not have the proper tap needed, if not you will need to buy one, im not sure of the thread and pitch offhand.

Id suggest upgrading to a higher volume (280zx turbo) oil pump as well.

edit: btw, the oil squirters in the de are simply aluminum casted oil passage extensions with tips designed to squirt. They are attached to the underside of the block via high grade banjo bolts. The portion of the block around the threaded hole is machined flat for obvious reason.

excellent.

I was planning on going to the 280zx oil pump already, but was wondering if there is anything that needs to be done to accomodate this? I know on the DE blocks there is some oil hole people like to tap and plug for higher pressure systems...dunno about the SOHC block - anything like this required?

the 280zx oil pump is a direct fit, you wont have to plug any passages. The oil passages and galleys in block are adequate for the extra volume.

Out of curiosity, do you know how much a set up like this would cost and would it be a good idea to do for a turbo aplication? I am currently dismantling a SOHC engine to rebuild and turbo for my '90 240. Thanks for keeping this public for everyone to reference!

You would be able to pull this off for 150-200 excluding the oem nissan parts. It all really depends on how willing or apt the machinist is. Most like doing small custom things like this for performance engines. I wouldnt say this is a bad idea, but one that requires understanding and some effort to make it work out nicely.

If you decide not to, Id be interested any extra squirters you have
