Surprise surprise.
I traded gage clusters on my 1990 2wd and my 1990 4x4.
When I drove the 4x4 I noticed the tach did not move.
Odd as it worked on the other gage cluster.
So I started my 2wd and . . . the tach worked.

Apparently my 2wd was wired for a tach even though it never had one from the factory.
Since it didn't work when I installed it years back I thought I needed to wire it in somehow.

If you want to add a tach give it a try.
Mine had the connector in the dash for the tach as well as the clock.

Most wiring harnesses are wired for all options, cheaper to use one harness and only use the plugs the truck comes optioned for. Many cars and trucks have empty plugs hanging loose that are not used on that particular model.

I have a cluster with a tach if anyone wants to buy it. It reads 155k and worked perfect till the day I removed it from my 96. If you use it in an older truck with no air bags you will have to remove the air bag light. I've been asking $40+shipping for all my clusters.

Lucky you, I installed one with a tack and its not moving! The clock works, I'm thinking the connector isn't making good contact!! I'm hoping its that!!

The tach is most likely no good.
