I'm installing my ACT 6 puck clutch and am not sure which way the clutch disk is supposed to be installed.

There is a "snout" on the splined hub of the clutch. I put this facing towards the transmission, and the mostly flat part facing towards the engine. The SFI spec sticker is also facing out towards the transmission the way I installed it - further making me think it's supposed to be installed this way.

I couldn't really refer back to the stock clutch orientation, as it seems almost symmetrical on both sides, but the 6 puck disk definitely has the splines sticking out farther on one side.

Also - any tips on getting the transmission input shaft to line up with the clutch hub? Me and a friend tried for about 30 minutes and had no luck. I put the transmission in gear and used the front of the driveshaft to rotate the input shaft, but we still couldn't force it in there. Just putting the disk on the input shaft was a chore though - VERY tight fit. Took me about 1 min with just the disk in my hands to line it up correctly.

First, there should be a stamp saying which way the face of the disk goes (front). Second, put it in neutral...it helps. Third, you are using an alignment tool right?

I looked all over the disk and didn't really see anything but what looked like a serial number stamped on the disk. I guess I'll take off the pressure plate and check it over again.

Whenever I put the transmission in neutral - I couldn't even remotely get the splines of the input shaft to line up with the clutch disk.

Definitely using an alignment tool and torquing everything to spec.

If I remember correctly "Front" should be stamped on the disk itself. The thing with putting the transmission back on the block is everything has to be level. You can't put a transmission back on with it at an angle. And if you weren't using an alignment tool then I would have to kill you....:)

FYI, in case anybody gets this thread in a search.

The ACT 6 puck disk does NOT have any stamping on it to indicate which direction to place it. There is an "F" stamp on the hub, which according to a pretty rude person at ACT stands for the number of splines on the hub.

If you look closely, you'll see the rivets/studs holding the hub to the disk are a different thickness on each side(the hub also "sticks out" on the side with the "fat" studs). If you put it up to the flywheel with the alignment tool, you'll see that the "thin" studs have to be facing the flywheel for there to be enough clearance for the disk to rotate. The "fat" studs will hit the flywheel bolts, and you aren't going anywhere with that happening. :)

So in short - thin studs face the flywheel and check to make sure the disk can freely rotate before bolting up the pressure plate.

BTW - I had to slightly grind down the pilot bushing on the inside diameter and then use the transmission bolts to pull the transmission to the engine. The pilot bushing was slightly too small as it came from ACT. Go figure...

Ok, now how does it ride? I am planning on getting a clutch that can hold 400ft.lbs or more (not spec, POS!). I always wanted to know how the drivability is on those.

what will happen if its in backwards... will the car start, will it damage anything, are things going to break?

I haven't completed my swap yet since it has been near 100*F here in the middle of the day, and I'm an anal bastard. But I'll let you guys know my impressions as soon as she starts up(will probably be next week as I'm having to get a few last minute parts for everything to be "perfect").

I've got a 10.5lb TODA flywheel too, so I'm wondering what she's going to feel like. I had a bunch of people try to steer me towards a SPEC clutch, but I made up my mind not to go with them a LONG time ago from hearing a experiences and them only being $10-20 cheaper. The ACT 6 puck looks pretty darn grabby, so I'm not sure if it'll be that friendly in stop and go traffic. My S13 isn't my daily driver though - so I wasn't too concerned with a little chatter and grabbiness on 1st gear starts.

If this particular clutch disk is installed backwards, it would bind against the flywheel bolts. As in, the clutch would never actually release. I'm hoping I got everything put together right in there, as I *REALLY* don't want to drop the transmission again.
