I wasn't sure where to post this, but I drive a Q45, so... here goes.I am wondering if anyone knows the regulations for driving an out of country vehicle into the US. How long may said vehicle stay before it must be registered, etc. As a diehard fan of the unobtainable JDM models which may never come to California, I think I may have found a solution... of sorts. A close friend will soon be moving to Toronto to live and work. Would it be possible to, for example, have a mailing address in Canada, register, say, a Gloria or a Skyline ->IN CANADA<- and simply drive it across the border as a "visitor" with every intention of driving it back in say... 6 months? any input would be appreciated.

The clock is ticking. You have 20 days and after that the Governator is coming after you. This is from the CA DMV web site:

When fees are due Fees must be paid within 20 days of entry or residency to avoid penalties. Any vehicle owned by a California resident must be registered within 20 days of entry into California unless a special permit was obtained. Nonresidents whose vehicles are properly registered to them in their home state or jurisdiction may operate their vehicles in California until they:

Accept gainful employment in California. Claim a homeowner's exemption in California. Rent or lease a residence in California. Intend to live or be located here on a permanent basis (for example, acquire a California driver license, acquire other licenses not ordinarily extended to a nonresident, registered to vote). Enroll in an institution of higher learning as a California resident or enroll their dependents in school (K-12). NOTE: Nonresident military personnel stationed in California or their spouses may operate their vehicles with valid out-of-state license plates from their home state or the state where the military person was last stationed.

Despite the laws, the only ways to get caught are if you get pulled over for a traffic violation and the officer starts questioning how long the President has been here, or....One of your neighbors gets tired of seeing an out-of-state vehicle not paying yearly registration fees and turns you in through the same DMV website (the state makes it easy to report) or calls the CHP and asks them to cite your car. In this case if you get pulled over more than 20 days after the citation is put on your windshield your Q gets impounded.

Not to mention posting here prior to the crime or just sending emails is evidence towards an additional crime of conspiracy to commit fraud against the People of California.Proof of Premeditation in your own written hand can add to your sentence.

Please take a few Law courses so you can be better prepared.

When you post here or any where you are posting to the entire world, remember NICO has ~30% of it's members from outside US.

Why anyone would want to operate a car with the driver on the outside side of the car is beyond me.

Well. As no crime has been committed and I was curious to see what the actual laws were (DMV can be notoriosly... fun to navigate) then I guess I'll just have to accept our pale US market offerings or move to Canada. Good lord Q45tech... you know how to shake up a guy's morning. First thing in my email, and it sounds like I'm going to prison. I'm sure I'm not the first to come across a silly idea such as this, but wow. A little heavy handed, perhaps?
