So like most enthusiasts, I have a ton of favorite vehicles and I have driven a lot of different ones already. In addition to that, I have my short list of dream vehicles that I would like to drive, but think it will be unlikely that I will anytime soon. Tonight I got to cross one of those vehicles off that list :mike

The wife texted me when she got to the hospital today and told me one of the doctors she works with had just bought a new Porsche yesterday. She was in a hurry to get in, so all she could tell me is that it was yellow at the time. I brought her dinner and managed to make it there before the doctor left for the evening, so when I pull in I catch a glimpse of a fairly new 911. So I go ahead and go in, then my wife mentions to him that I was drooling over it and he says "Would you like to take it for a spin?" :shifter:

Of course I said absolutely. He hands me the keys and I get out to the parking lot, only to discover that it's a 2007 911 Turbo!

Once I figured out how to unlock it and let the seat back, I managed to get it without too much effort, but it still was a bit awkward considering i'm so tall. I have never driven a Porsche at all, so this was a new experience for me. The ignition switch was in an odd spot, which was on the far left side, behind the steering wheel. I started it up and was really surprised how simple the controls were inside of it - all of the switches were easy to locate and operate. Putting it in reverse was a bit odd at first, but growing up around VW's I already knew it was up and left, it still took a minute to figure out how to get it in reverse.

After I got used to that though, everything else was cake. The clutch was even fairly easy to operate, which really surprised me for a high end car like this. I drove it out to the main intersection and waited at the light to turn onto the main highway that goes through our city. Once I got the slow PT Cruiser out of my way, I had an opening and decided to let it rip. HOLY HELL WAS IT FAST. This thing lays down 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and I believe it. The thing that really shocked me though is that it didn't really scare me... It didn't try to get loose, it didn't shove me in the seat, and it didn't feel like it was trying to kill me. It just grabbed and took off, without any fuss really. I felt it get tail happy for a split second when I layed into it for the second time, but even then, no real fuss - just simple and raw power.

The gear box was tight and easy to operate. It wasn't really a stiff ride, or really load either, even when it was opened up. I didn't really have enough time to throw it through any corners, plus it was dark and it wasn't mine, so with that kind of price sticker i'd rather not push it ;)

After getting back, I spoke with him a bit more about it. He said he just bought it last weekend and this is his first 911 Turbo, but his third 911 that he's owned. He said that they've all been surprisingly reliable too - other than oil changes and very basic maintenance, he's never had a problem out of any of them. This one had 38k miles on it and it was in better shape than most new cars i've been in.

Overall I was really surprised that for a high end car - I felt completely right at home in it. Other than maybe a little more legroom, it was fairly comfortable and was very nice inside. I wish I could've seen it in the daylight though, so I could've learned a little more about it. It was hard to really examine it in the pitch black dark, but hopefully i'll get to take another look at it one day soon. It's definitely not bad for a "Souped Up Beetle" though :chuckle:

Awesome! With all the shops I've worked in, I've driven lots of awesome stuff from old school muscle to new Z06s and some European stuff.

Very nice. The 911 is such a strange car...it's a precise honing of some very odd tech. It defies itself in a lot of ways...rear-engined cars aren't supposed to be easy to drive and "not scary" but that's all I hear about 911s.

I really wish Porsche would stop being afraid of stepping on their baby's toes, though. It has kept them from creating some genuinely amazing models in the past. Right now, it's holding back the technically superior Cayman/Boxster combo. Before that it was the front-engined Porsches being held back.

Sadly, all I've driven is a Cayenne.

Welcome to the club. Porsches are among my favorites. I've driven too many of them to count. The newer ones have become disarmingly easy to drive fast, which naturally attracts me to the older ones with skinny tires.

the one i drove was a few years old already, but i went through everything you described (i drove an auto). my buddy laughed at me trying to find where the key goes. after that it was "how do i get the top down?" and "try and keep up in the exploder". i didn't bring it onto the highway, but i found a few nice curves. i did hold back a lot because i don't like to drive other people's cars nearly as hard as i would drive my own.

I was rather surprised how well balanced it was. I was expecting it to scare me a little, but even though it wasn't quite as crazy as I expected, I liked it. It felt like a car I could drive in any weather and feel comfortable. I love that adrenaline rush that you get from something that tries to kill you if you don't respect it, but for someone like me, I don't think i'd want that every day. I drive something like that every so often and i'm good for a while. I felt like I could enjoy that Porsche every day though.

I wish they would quit holding back the Cayman/Boxster too. It's already been said numerous times that they're capable of being as fast as a 911, but they continue to hold them back because they don't want to give their 911 a bad name. It's the number game there though - If a Cayman was as fast as a 911, then why buy the 911?

I've always been a huge Porsche fan, even since I was a kid. My first car should have been a 72 911T, but my mom decided at the last minute that she didn't want me to have it. Not because it was too fast, or the insurance would've been too high - BECAUSE IT DIDN'T HAVE AIR CONDITIONING!

I've always wanted a 930 Turbo personally. They're still my favorite body style to date. I'd like to drive a Cayman sometime though, because they seem rather reasonable in price.

930 turbos are great. If I were buying a Porsche now, it would be either a newer Cayman S, which is a delightful car, or a 993 (last of the aircooled 911's ).

I think the Boxters and Caymans are more for people who cant quite afford a 911 but want the Porsche name in their driveway. Sort of the affordable budget car versions of their dreams. I think Id rather have a Cayman too. They look alittle better and the center exhaust from the Boxter bothers me in a weird way.

Great thread title!

I've parked tons of 911s in my valet days and I can say they are some of my favorite cars. I didn't like the bottom hinged pedals of the 993 and earlier cars. And that's the only complaint I can think of...

Boxsters/Caymans are not bad cars at all. Imagine a Cayman powered by a GT3 motor. That would be awesome! But like MoD said, they consciously hold them back to protect sales of the 911.

Ahah, I got excited just reading your post! Good description and the same things I would've been commenting on too.
I've only had a ride on an autocross course in the same generation 911. Awesome car and the owner was really cool ---not the stereotypical 'c***' as Clarkson warns us about. :P

Awesome! Though I've never been a big fan of 911's, I'd still wanna try one out. I crossed off a checklist car a couple of years ago when I got to drive an R8. Its cool when people let you drive cool cars and are cool about it. Now if I could find someone who would let me try out a Carrera GT, I'd be set for life.

I still want a Boxster. They seem more user-friendly.

If you were on the east coast, I could have hooked you up. I have a good friend that owned a Carerra GT for many years (now sold). He was one of the few owners to use his regularly at the track, and always welcomed passengers.
