I picked up a tiny 15.6'' Acer 16:9 monitor for a little over $100. Nice to have a dual monitor setup finally.

Any recommendations for good multi-monitor software to run? Preferably free? (I don't really feel like paying $40 for UltraMon's 2 or 3 useful features.)

Nice. I've had a dual-head set up for a few years now. Both use a 4:3 aspect ratio, but wider screens would be too wide for my desk space anyways.

As for the software, what is it you want the software to be able to do? I use whatever my video card (Nvidia) driver came with and it does the job adequately. So I'm not sure I understand the question since I never had to buy anything to be able to extend my desktop...

Yeah, nVidia has some good multimonitor software included in their driver suite. I'm running an ATI video card, though, so I can't use it.

Things I'd like to be able to do:

Have shortcuts with extensions to open in a specific monitor (So I can have Firefox, iTunes, Outlook shortcuts on both monitors that open to the corresponding monitor. That way I don't have to mess with dragging windows every time I start a program.)

Different backgrounds for each monitor

Screen saver on both monitors

Task bar across both monitors, with each only showing the apps on that monitor.

Something with a small memory footprint.

Right now I'm trying the free version of Display Fusion and I like it, and it offers most of these features in the full version. It's cheaper than UltraMon, too, so I may just buy the pay version. But I was curious if anyone has experience with good software of this type before I buy.

I have used Display Fusion for quite some time now, and I really like it.

I just got a bunch of great cityscapes and a lot of awesome pics of the Twin Towers (RIP) and have been using Wallpaper Slideshow LT, because I am too cheap to pay for the full version of Display Fusion which lets me slideshow the desktops. So it is another okay free program that will let me slideshow my desktops for, but I may just pay for the full version of Display Fusion.

Yeah, I picked it up back when it first came out in 2004. It's really good. It analyzes social engineering examples in detail. Definitely a fun read, and it changes the way you look at the human aspect of security. It seems especially relevant to me now that I find myself in the position of the potential weak human link in the security business for my job.

I still need to pick up The Art of Intrusion.
