Is a 95 Q45 OBDII compatible? Is it OBDI compatible? Is there any way to access the comptuer codes from the car, or do you have to read them with a special device.

I know that parts stores like autozone read codes for free, are they able to do it, or is this a dealer thing?

Thanks

Wes

OBDII started in 1996 for the Q. You can read the codes on the older ECUs by unbolting them and turning a screw on the unit into a test mode. Count the flashes and look the code up in the book. I would think that the appropriate code reader would work too. My one experience with AutoZone reading codes didn't inspire a lot of confidence, but it's probably worth a try.

The problem with OBD2 is even after you have the code [usually 3-4 for each individual sensor because each test is backed up] you still must read 3-5 pages in the service manual to diagnose what has failed or if something associated is causing the sensor to receive bad data........other test are usually required.

OBDI has a limited number of sensors so that the ecu checks a range of operation..........close enough to work somewhat or not close enough to work. vs perfect right on for optimum low emissions.

Both require some thought and interpretation to avoid changing the wrong thing.

Too many techs take the codes to heart and just change the part!

ok thanks,

Off topic, but I took my car in for a service today, and they said it needed 3 new belts. I havent talked to the guy directly YET, because my dad took it in. Well anyway, they said it would be about 150 to get it done, after labor. Apparently they had to order the belts. Does this sound reasonable??

Sure. Their parts are probably $50 or more after their markup (or $34 from Scottsdale). Then they tack on an hour of book time perhaps, which is fair, at $80/hr or so. Add some tax and voila! $150 bill.
