acceleration problems

when i bought my car i had it inspected and the mechanic told me that the only problem with the car was that the "belts" would need changing soon, so im driving it as is for now and im wondering if it's possible that the reason for my slow acceleration is these belts?

belts really wont cause any performance problems, only reason to change is stop noise or or that they look worn out( cracks etc.)
