So I've got a couple questions on AC to see if you guys have any advice.

My 1990 Z was R12. I bought and installed the adapters for R134a.

I have not drained the oil, and am wondering if any of you who have been through the conversion process have any advice on if and how to change the oil in AC on these cars. The generic info I've seen have been split between "oh my god, you need to flush everything, get new O rings through out, etc." to "Install new adapters, evacuate, and fill with new refrigerant."

I'm trying to figure out what I should do regarding oil.

So,

Change it?

Leave it?

Go full anal and do all the flushing of lines, new o rings, etc.. etc...

Am most interested in real world advice as in "you did it this way" and it turned out how"?

Basically the refrigerant oil is what makes you have cold A/C or not, and evacuating the refrigerant is the b**** of the job and where the major expense comes in as you are supposed to have it properly evacuated while the new refrigerant is added, all after the conversion process.
When my TT front got damaged and the A/C components also, I replaced them but did not get the system refilled as I would have had to convert to R13A and then get the fill, which they said would be extra difficult without the previous refrigerant to pull in the new in the evacuation process.

So, in your case it's all about whether you want A/C or not- if so then you need to finish the conversion job and get the system evacuated (old refrigerant oil removed) and the new added.

So I guess I will be a test case.

So after evacuating the system, I could tell it was leak free (held vacuum for 10 minutes w/ no loss).

So rather than crack open every connection and change o-rings, flush, etc.... (ie., the right way to do it)

I just added new R134a, changed the receiver dryer, and did not change the oil. My brother in law who is in auto AC says it should be fine as long as the moisture is kept out.

Anyway, the AC is blowing cold again. I'll report back if things go wrong..... or don't. :)
