Car: Basketball, hooking up the 240 and hanging out.

My car is a 1991 Nissan 240sx SE Fastback.. Ok, when I go to turn on my AC it starts sqreeching and then my car dies (if i don't turn the AC off quick), what could this problem be, I've had some suggestions, and one is that it is my Compressor, but i just want to make sure because those costs around $400.00.. Any help you can give will be nice.. Thanks

yea sounds like it locked up internally
