Purchased a 95 J30 a few months ago. The AC was not working, had it charged, but was next to useless below 50 MPH. On the freeway it got cold enough to make ice, even in 95 degree heat. AC shop recommended an expansion valve ($200) or possibly a new compressor ($400 plus labor).
Took a closer look at the car and noticed that the AC condenser fan (the "pusher" fan on the front of the radiator) was not coming on. If this fan doesn't work, there's no airflow across the condenser to t shed the heat from the freon Found the following to be the problems:
1. OEM condensor fan was siezed, not surprising at 15 years and 180K miles. Replaced with a generic Hayden electric cooling fan for $55 from Pep Boys (model 3860, IIRC, but I would go with the next bigger one).
2. Fusible link for condenser fan was blown, no doubt due to the siezed fan.
3. At this point, I expected the fan to run, but it didn't. Turned out that the coolant temp sensor was bad. The computer needs the signal from the coolant temp sensor to know the engine is warm enough to turn the fan on. With a bad temp sensor it never got that signal. $15 5 minute fix. Be careful not to lose the wire retaining clip on the on the harness connector for the coolant temp sensor.
At this point, the condenser fan now comes on any time the AC is on and the coolant temp is above 94C and vehicle speed is below 39 MPH. AC works like a champ. Total cost of all parts was $75 plus the better part of a Sunday afternoon.
