I had heard that you should replace the dryer and some oil in the AC. Do you need to get into the sealed system to do this?

Thanks

Yes, the drier forms part of the pressurized (and oiled) system.

I wish I could find the old posts that listed this. . . But, my recollection is the you actually use 2 dryers/evaporators when R&Ring the Q's variable compressor.

One is used during the vacumn and inital fill, then the 2nd one is used to complete the process. This eliminates all old oils and acids from the system, and makes sure the new freon is properly filtered before resealing the system.

I think the old Q service actually called for the dual evap method when reparing leaks or changing components on the 90-93's.

The evaporator is what dumps heat into the R-12, causing the fluid to evaporate. This chills the unit, and the air around it, which is then blown into the cabin. Typically the evaporator is left alone unless it is known to be faulty. The drier is full of dessicant, which can get saturated with moisture and make the drier stop functioning. It gets replaced in an overhaul, but there's only one. Really there's no way to get all the oil oil out without doing a flush. The machines used to evacuate and recharge ACs have their own driers and filters built in to process the fluid.

Daedalus, Yes there is only 1 in the system, but I could swear the was a TSB for the early Q's which required 2 dryers during the maintenace process. Maybe this was one of those things that Dennis recommended and I just took it the wrong way.

I'll see if I can dig up the references, I could just be flat out wrong on the need for 2 during the proceedure.

The 2 dryer method assumed you flushed all the lines with a special cleaning charge which washed thru the evaporator and condenser.

We have a special machine that is actually just a pressured tank to hold the hydrocarbon cleaning oil.The dryer also contains a filter screen to try and catch the metal/seals from a failed compressor but it is located on the input so the bad things have to go thru the entire system before they are filtered............metal in lines to from evap, evap itself, and condenser thus the need to flush.

Waiting for a compressor to fail assures you that garbage is everywhere...........the new compressor probably last 12,000 miles because a new dryer keeps most of the old metal from reaching the new compressor.

But if you want as new life you must flush out ALL the other components.
