Hello all,

I picked up my Versa yesterday and noticed something strange today. Any time the fan switch is moved from 0 to 1 the AC light goes on. Even when I have the heat to full warm, it always does this. I am going to call the dealer on Monday but was curious if anyone else ever had this happen.

Thanks!

If your defroster is turned on this is normal.

Thanks for the response but I am confused as to how that makes sense. If I start my car up on a cold morning and run the heat and the defroster, the AC starts once I turn on the fans??

Seems a bit odd to me.

There have been multiple threads on this topic already, had you done a search...

In a nutshell: they turn it on with the defroster because the A/C helps dehumidify the air, which removes fog from the inside if the window much faster than just heat alone.

(as an aside, I did search but didn't see the "search body of posts" option so nothing was coming up...I'll know better next time)

Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense.

If you have not figured this out yet, but the AC only turns on is when you have your dialed switched to defrost windows or defrost w/ legs...i know i don't make sense...but if you don't wanna have AC turn on just move the dial setting to the middle...with just the leg or any other setting besides defrost

And if it's below a certain temperature outside, the AC light will be lit, but the AC unit does not actually turn on. Make sure you do not have the air vent set to recycle if you are trying to defrost in this case, as the car will fog up very badly. (see other thread).

Be glad we don't have the same system as the '01-'04 Frontier... if the defroster is selected for any reason, the AC kicks on... but CANNOT be shut off afterwards regardless of vent selection until the engine is shut off and key removed.

I just wanted to add... this is normal in all vehicles with a/c. The compressor needs to run in the winter months to prevent it rusting.

People are just confused with the V because the light comes on. If you want to reduce compressor use but remain in defrost mode, just press that darling little button and the light goes out.)
