I have a 95 240SX that is making clicking noises when the ac or heat is on/off unless the air flow control button is in the feet only position. It started out only making the noise on the 1st button which is the air flow to your face. I thought it was because I used that one the most, then little by little it progressed to the other buttons. Now I cant even use my defrost without listening to this clicking sound which is driving me crazy. Please help!

Has anyone else had this problem?

it is the mode door actuator. the inner gears of it are binding and it is stripping the gears. the reason it continues to make the noise is because the actuator his limit switches and its looking for the limit switch while its trying to adjust to the requested location. since it is bound it never reaches that limit switch in its travel. therefore the motor continualy runs and pops on the gear teeth(your audible clicking noise). replace the mode door actuator and it will be all good. to find it under your dash turn the key on and put it in one of the positions that makes it click. poke your head under the dash ,probably on the passenger side, look for a rod snapped into a white clip on a small black box that is jerking in unison with the noise. that black box is your actuator replace the box.

When you go to install it set your controls to defrost. plug the actuator in and watch the movement of the arm. which ever direction it went is the direction you need to push the steel rod as far as it will go(no force needed just as far as it will go freely) then with both of them in that direction snap the rod back into the actuator. Test all modes and it should be repaired.

Nistech, is this fairly easy to fix by someone who is not a mechanic? Would the dash have to be taken apart? Do you have any idea how much the repair would cost doing it yourself vs having the dealer do it? Is the part easy to get?

Thanks again!

it is a fairly easy repair. the actuator is held on by 2 phillips or 7 mm head screws. you may need to remove the glove box asembly to gain access but that is only held in place by 6 to 8 phillps screws. once you have that off the actuator should be totally visable. part cost not sure on. this job takes less then 30 mins to do with hand tools.
