Last year I spent about a grand getting the AC working.

Replaced the fan switch, compressor, receiver drier, and did a full flush and recharge (R12).

After parking this winter, I came to find out that the AC isnt working yet again.

Could this be something electrical? After parking so long I noticed the car had a hard time starting.Sometimes overnight, when I put the key in and turn it to "On" I'll get the radio with only a couple speakers going until I completely start the vehicle.

I've been driving the Q a lot this week and that problem has slowly begun to wear off.

Could a weak battery cause my starting problem, along with my AC problem? Fan blows plenty of warm air. All other accessories work fine.

You more than likely have a leak. There is a presure sensor that prevents the compressor from turning on if there isn't enough refergerent. Take it back and tell them to fix it. Do a die leak check. Or get 608 or 609 (can't remember which) certified and DIY.

Got my FSM and 10mm wrench. Amazing what you can do with those 2 things on a Q!!!

Hey Jes,

What temp does your AMB reflect when the a/c blows warm? If I nail a hard 1-2 shift sometimes, the AMB goes to -20 so the controller blows fire through the vents. Slowly the ambient temp returns to normal & I get cold air again. I need to replace the sensor front & center behind the front bumper & It should be ok.

So... what does the code "20" mean?

It's not a code 20 it's a false reading from the ambient temp sensor that is telling the HVAC system it's 'negative 20 degrees' outside.

So if the system thinks that it is 20 below zero outside, and you ask that it make the temp in the cabin 65 degrees (max a/c) then it thinks it should blow fire through the vents to bring the temp "up" to 65 degrees from the 20 below zero outside.

Did that make sense?

The sensor is mounted to the radiator support behind the opening in the bumper. It just clicks into a hole on the radiator support.

When it does this, I usually turn the system to Econ, drive for a few minutes, turn the car off, turn it back on, and it usually resets itself. Otherwise, if I drive long enough & check the AMB every couple of minutes, it will gradually resume normal temp reporting. When it reaches the correct ambient temp, the a/c resumes normal operation.

The ambient temperature reading has always been accurate. Wes checked the codes for me and got a "20".

Jesda.

Looking back in the FSM, there IS no code 20. Code 21 is the next nearest, and i dont think thats your problem.... It may have been code 22, cant remember for sure...... ;) Sorry short term memory is bad!

Go back out to the Q, turn the ignition to on, not started, and hold OFF until the display does the segment check. Then press warmer, you should get a 2, it will think for a second, and then display a code... CODE 20 means everything is golden.....

Well, guess what...

THE BELT IS GONE!

A friend said the belt could have come off due to a seized compressor (gasp!) so I went out and turned the part in the center, and it rotated. Code 20 came up, so I just need a belt and I'm good to go.

My suspicion is that some time this winter, I plowed through some heavy stuff and it knocked the belt off.

Would the clutch engaged make a difference to it seizing? Also, did you turn the tensioner pulley too? It's not easy to "knock a belt off" without causing all kinds of other damage! Those things are really strong.

Well, there's this disc between the crank and the compressor, and it doesnt turn. My guess is thats the problem. So, belt/pulley replacement ensues!

Thanks for the help everyone. :)

As others have stated, you may want to do all the idlers at once and be done with them. Ballpark is $100 for all 3 I think.

Yeah, id replace them all at once.. I have one that squeels when cold, probably not too far away from death!!!

I would assume youd wanna replace this before you sell the car.
