I know it it winter but looking ahead to next summer. My 1991 is going to need freon as it was not as cold late summer. Anyone converted r12 to r134 on one of the hard bodies? If so how hard and what all is needed. Also is the R134 as cold as R12, mine was like ice at the beginning of summer but as it got real hot it took a long ride to cool off and get cold as my truck is black and gets hot as hell in the sun. I do not think it has any leaks has been fine for 2 yrs but just wondering if it needs replacing what all is involved and how cold is the new stuff compared to old?

As far as I know there are r134a conversion kits out there which include the adapters to change the old fittings to the new style. I have never done one myself but Pepboys did a lot of them back when I used to service write for them. R12 is colder than r134a. Harbor Freight has r12 gauge sets cheap, you can check your system performance with those to see if you have a blockage somewhere or even a leak. Is your compressor still cycling?

Oh yeah works fine just as summer got real hot in bama and truck being black it was as cold. I am thinking it needs some added been looking for some freeze 12 like I used in the old mazda that perked it back up. If I cannot find it was just looking at upgrade. it cools fine after 15 minutes of riding but in stop and go it is not so cold, just like my old mazda and 1 can perked it back to ice cold.

Good luck finding any r12. The stuff has been off the market for so many years now I doubt anyone is selling without a premium. If your compressor is still running the system isn't low on freon, it may be that the freon that is in the system is toast.

I know but they had a eco friendly replacement called freeze 12 that was used on my mazda. R12 has been illegal for yrs but the freeze 12 was a replacement, I found a place on the web at 10 bucks a can, may go ahead and order and hold it until spring.
