I don't think I've had the dash apart on my 240 but usually vent controls are vacuum powered. It's common for a hose to come off or get a hole in it.

Your vent selector motor is shot, working when it feels like it, or is getting stuck. best bet is to keep it on the dash vents, but after i show you how to dougie, u can manually switch it back.

lay on ur back and look up to the side of the dash from the drivers side you will see this white plastic boomerang mechanism that moves and selects which vents to open and close. turn your dash buttons to blow on the face, and manually turn the boomerang far counter clockwise as you can until its in this position. the white tab will meet the end of the metal guide rail.
