ok so im driving my car home from school today.its extremely hot so i have my ac running.i come to a stop and I can hear a slight clicking noise, and i look at my tach and its kind of bouncing at around 1000rpms,so i think "ahh great".i get home and pop my hood and search for the source. i find out its the ac compressor, right below the alternator.when the ac is on and the a/c button is pressed it spins at first for about 30 seconds and then stops for about 15 seconds.after that it randomly spins for a second and stops, repeatedly.each time it makes a loud sound the the engine slightly bogs.my best guess is maybe its going out on me?anyone had this problem?I need ac because its hot as my a** crack outside.the ac still runs cold and i can only hear the sound when im idling. Im hoping to hold out for about a month because Im planning to swap the engine this summer

Dunno man.. Mine started doing this crap today. I put some freon in it and the compressor came on and ran fine until I had somewhat cool air coming through the vents. Then the compressor shut off, came back on and off every 5 seconds or so and it too would bog down the motor, sounded bad.. the a/c belt squealing and stuff..

It's too G&#damned hot to be without a/c, especially since hatches get no breeze in the cabin

A/C compressors do bog down motors, especially smaller ones. It's an extra load the motor has to turn.

And to the post ^, why are you just randomly putting freon in your compressor? The right way and the safe way is to get the system evacuated first. No wonder why your compressor has problems.

I know I know, you have to get a vacuum on the a/c system, I don't have 200 bucks to rent 5 minutes to use one at an autozone or o really's and I know putting a little freon will keep it cool for a week or so at the very least, until I get the money to have a professional do it.

Oh and by "bog" down, it's not like a typical drop of 200rpms, it's more having some giant grab your crank pulley and try to keep everything from turning. And I don't just throw sh%t at my car to try and fix it, I have my ways of doing things when I have to improvise.

The A/C compressor cycling on and off indicates that its out of Freon, normally. But, if the air is still cold, then its possibly the low pressure switch. Id look at that first since it will be cheaper to replace/fix. Bad side is, the system will still need to be evacuated to change the LP switch.
