My compressor is seizing... yesterday when I left work, I heard what sounded like the belt slipping. My compressor has also been getting noisier and noisier. Turned off the AC and the sound ceased instantly so I know it's the compressor.

Priced a new compressor with IOS and the chick there quoted me a figure of around $587.00. WTF??? I'm going to call a dealer here in ATL just to compare. That price is ridiculous.

Well... looks like I'll be going JDM used again. I was quoted $100 for a compressor from the same outfit that I got my transmission from. Taking car to them today so they can match it up.

So, the consensus is to replace the receiver/dryer too? IOS quotes $70 for the dryer.

You should replace with A/C Compressor the Drier, O-rings, Seals, Drier Switch and I would flush out system prior to installing all your replacement parts! Make sure you use a good oil/dye based refrigerant for charging your system!

Yes, and don't buy any compressor that has been open to the atmosphere for any amount of time.

I wouldnt say that buying a used compressor is bad, just note that a) it could posisbly fail, b) it will need cleaned before install regardless..... you want to get all the old oil out!!!

Dear Drew,

You should replace the dryer when replacing the AC compressor. You will also need to replace all the o-rings. I assume there is refrigerant still in the system, so you will want to recover it and flush the system. Sometimes the compressors come part and put trash into the lines. Mine did.

You did not say how much of the repair you would do yourself. If you want to install the compressor yourself, have the shop evacuate the system, and then you can install the dryer and compressor. Seal all the holes and leave the lines hanging. The shop then flushes the system, connect the lines and then charge and leak test the system. (Note: not many shops allow this level of flexibility, but it will save you the labor)

Since you are in the Atlanta area, I have had great success and have great confidence using Same Day Auto/Team Tire & Fleet Service on Fulton Industrial and Veterans Memorial/Bankhead Highway. They recently acquired a larger shop, thus the multiple names. The owner, Sonny (678.481.4730 Cell) is very flexible and easy to work with. Working at both the Infiniti dealer and T3 for many years, he is very experience with Inifinitis. They have several Q45 parts cars around back. They did my timing chain guides and my last AC work at a fraction of the price quoted by T3. I only have limited work outsourced, am very value conscience, very mechanically literate and very picky about who works on my vehicles, Sonny does all my work! Good honest business people.

Call Whitey's Wrecking in Spokane WA. All their used compressors are flushed and sealed for sale to the public. $100 plus shipping.

I second everything PopPop said.

If you install the compressor yourself, its easy but tedious. Put the front of the car on some stands and have a soft pad to lay on while you remove the bolts... there's a lot of them.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and referrals.

I called back the JDM supplier and asked if the compressors were sealed. He said no, and that some of them even have water in them from sitting around, however, "no one ever brought one back or said one didn't work"...

So... I'd like to know what happens when one sits around like that.. dried seals, contaminants? Will flushing make it okay? To be honest, everytime I've seen used compressors (of any make), it's just sitting around open.

I'll definately hook up all the hardware myself (been dying for a reason to try out my new Craftsman racheting flex wrenches)... I'm going to order the dryer and O-rings from IOS today. I pulled the compressor once during alternator install but left the lines intact.

Very RARELY are used compressors sealed.. As long as you clean it good and replace the seals and reoil, you should be fine.

Okay things are starting to happen. Yesterday I ordered the dryer from IOS ($70) along with the AC belt (not sure if the current belt is damaged). They didn't have the O-rings so I guess I'll just get em here in ATL.

Went hunting for a used compressor and my JDM supplier had one in the building. It was still attached to a VH-45 but it seemed to have been dropped on the pulley and felt rough when turned. The manager did not want to sell it to me and I didn't want it. He advised me to wait until his next shipment from Japan in mid-July. Yeah right...I'll be a melted popsicle by then. Left there and hooked up with Slim who sold me a used compressor just pulled off a motor for $25... The thing is black and greasy due to a valve cover leak on the motor it was on but seems okay otherwise. Nothing a brush and some brake cleaner won't take care of.

My current compressor gave up the ghost yesterday. I decided to run it since I had nothing to lose. It stopped cooling after 20 mins and now seems to be spinning free now

....Hopefully I'll be cooling again by next week.

Got a used compressor from Slim and the dryer just arrived via UPS. Looks like they reman these things as the cylinder had vertical scrapes on it...as if being intalled before. Look at the messy welds. Sorry bout the pic quality... it's a cell phone camera.

I got it from Scottsdale for $71.90. Now I have to find the compressor O-rings cause they didn't have any. I'm wondering if I can just get them from a nearby Nissan dealer. I'm assuming the line fittings to be standard?

Just remember to totally flush all the ac line flex and hard and the evaporator and condenser.WHEN the compressor fails gets noisey it throws pieces of seals and metal throughout the system.

I flushed my condenser yesterday and reduced my temp by 5F, this was because 4 years ago when I changed compressor, hoses, dryer, and condenser I was in a hurry and skipped the flush since the compressor had not failed just was getting noisey..........my BAD............changing the dryer last week got me 3F.

Today in 104F ambient sensor reading[radio said 95F] traffic able to get down to 43F full speed.

I'll bet there is another 2,3,4F of restriction [broken up seals coat inside of aluminum tubes -- act like an insulator] and chunks change the flow rate and pressure.

Just bite the bullet and clean everything at one time.

Is the drier you sell similiar to the one pictured? Does it come with a new pressure switch as well?

There is a place local (to me) here in Phoenix that has the O-Rings, here's a link. I was recommended to this place from several sources at garages I've done business with and I got linked to it from another thread on this site. Good prices I think.

http://www.ackits.com/merchant...P3008

Go to there home page and enter the car you have and they have several parts for them, including compressors for $241.53

Read back in the AC post to 2003 then go forward in time............you will see all the nightmare cheapo conversions...........people begging for help!

We see very few conversions on 90-93Q or Lexus and the one we do see are worthless..............we refuse to work on them other than refilling the R134a without a return to oem R12...................the old condenser just won't function well at idle or low speed.

I have to investigate the cost of a custom fully parallel condenser with 2 custom hoses for a 90-93 Q this might just be the ticket to [have R12] exceed the performance of any R134a including brand new ones.

It appears these guys might make sometthing up for ~~<$500

When you buy an aftermarket evaporator core for $175-$200 you must spend around 2 hours installing the optional new expansion valve and the [non supplied insulation] black asphalt like sheet of sticky pads and position the bulb sensor........nasty part of the job.

Whereas the oem comes assembled and ready to swap in the plastic housing................however the cost is higher than the do it yourself method even at $75 per hour.

My old compressor has completely failed to the point of making an awful noise when engaged so I'm considerate of the advice mentioning how trash can enter the lines.

I'm dealing with a mechanic who says he can do a manual flush using a flush kit, but it won't flush the condenser, which is something he thinks shouldn't be done. I've already explained to him that I am converting to R134A and he thinks it shouldn't be a problem. I'm not so enthused with his 'I've done this a million times' nonchalant approach. Funny thing is, he is currently in the middle of installing a JDM motor in ratty looking 92Q. I advised him to change the guides while the engine was sitting on the groud, but he refused because of the extra cost. I also noticed that he had removed the driveshaft by removing the guibos/rubber donut. He was quite pissed when I told him he will most like deal with vibration once he puts it back together. This is his personal car btw.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand... he finally said If I wanted to have it flushed on a machine, to go ahead and I once I had all that done, bring it to him for recharge. He said around 4 cans of freon and a small bottle of oil should suffice. Does anyone know what will be needed for full recharge of a totally evacuated and flushed system? I am seeking the exact amount of oil and freon I will need.

PS, I probably won't use this guy.

The FSM contains everything one needs to know concerning oil amounts per component [the sum of which is 8 ounces]............7-8

R134a is a variable depending on the depth of evacuation 1.95-2.05 pounds should be close enough.....one the system has run in a few hours you decide upon amount extra or not by reading pressures.

Over or under oiling is often a source of problems.........evacuating 100% of old oil depends on disassembly of everything and careful time consuming work.

Making a old system new often means replacing 100% of old parts........the things you don't change will rear their ugly head after you use the system a month.
