When I bought my car, it had no belt on the AC compressor. Today I decided I want to get the AC working, after driving for two hours in a very hot car. When I looked at the AC compressor, it had oil all over it (?) and when I turn it, something on the inside starts to grind. Anybody dealt with compressors before? Is it shot?

Well, if the oil is from the AC system, then it doesn't really matter if the compressor "works" since there won't be any freon to compress. The grinding sounds like a bad bearing, which would make sense in light of the leak you found.

I dunno if the leak is from the compressor though... the whole bottom part of the engine is covered with oil. I'm thinking it was a leak in the front seal. Anyways... is there a way to fix the bearing on the inside? Or do I have to buy a whole new compressor?

It'll require some specialized tools, but I've never done it so I can't tell you how hard it would be. The manual I have doesn't have any info for rebuilding Nissan compressors.

Neither does my Chilton's, who says that all A/C work should be done by a qualified mechanic.

Anyways, I pulled the compressor out yesterday, tried spinning it, and it still grinds. So right now I'm trying to figure out how to take it apart and look at it. Does anybody have any information regarding rebuilding a compressor? Is there anything inside the FSM? Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

you can take it apart but if its grinding when you rotate the inner part of the pulley the compressor is most likely wasted internally there are no servicable parts internally only seals and clutch componants on the pully section. other then that its not repairable. if you do fix this recommend your replace the receiver/dryer as well since that is where any metal from the compressor will collect.

Don't even bother trying to rebuild it. It's not worth it. Especially because if you screw it up it will more than likely fill the entire system with trash and you will trying to unblock the system for years to come. Just buy a quality rebuilt or new unit and fix the system correctly.
