AC compressor seized - 2008 Versa SL

The AC was working and blowing cold, then seized and is burning up the belt. Would this be indicative of a seized clutch bearing, the entire compressor, or something else entirely? Is this an uncommon mode of failure, and what's the most cost effective way of correcting it, exclusive of labor charges.
