Has anyone ever replaced the idler pulley & clutch on their own? The bearings on my compressor idler pulley went out on me. The whine was horrible! I slipped the belt(no AC at the moment) and want to change the pulley on my own, but I want to know before hand if I'm getting in over my head. My FSM shows the compressor out of the car. Can it be done while it's in the car? And if Joe is listening, is the pulley sold seperately or as an assembly with the compressor? I searched the site but saw only the compressor pricing. 97 Q non touring.

Any and all advice would help.

The FSM mentions a hand press to put the pulley back on. Should I be worried about not having one? Will a good hammer be sufficient?

Just to make sure, your talking about the compressor IDLER pulley, not the pulley ON the compressor?

I think you have to buy the clutch and pulley together....

Do you think I will need to press it onto the compressor like the manual says. Or can I tap it on with a mallet?

Joe says $248 for the pulley. I dunno if I shouldl hit up the pick and pull parts yard. I guess it depends if I can still complete the job myself without a press.

i would try an in situ before i'd disconnect the compressor. NOTE: i have not ever done this on a nissan product, but i have done similar clutch/pulley a long time ago on a yorx compressor. i needed a jaw type puller to remove the old. biggest trick was holding the clutch still while torquing the centre bolt. i would not pound it. you might try *temporarily * using a centre bolt 1/2 inch longer so that it engages, tighten enough to seat the new pulley, and then remove the temporary bolt and put in the real one and torque it up.

best of luck

If it is bent or warped and needing replacement, grab a used one from a wrecker and have a machine shop swap the clutch for cheap. Its not labor intensive, but its quite annoying to do if you don't have the proper tools.

The junkyards ore full of maxima and j30s. But no 97 Qs. No Q at all for thar matter. The question is, did nissan use the same AC compressor in all of their model lines? I just want the pulley, if the maximas and j30s can fit I'll be in business.
