ABS

I am a new member of this forum although I have been reading it for 2 years. I have a 2011 Rogue and have had no issues in 2 years. I did recently have a situation that was disconcerting - we had a small snow fall but it was very slippery and I made the mistake of choosing a route to work with a short but steep down hill. The abs was clattering away all the way down the hill. I got close to the bottom and the abs stopped working and the abs light came on the dash along with the brake light, awd lit and traction control light. ABS was obviously not working as the car swerved seriously every time I touched the pedal. Had no awd either. When I could pull over I stopped the engine, restarted and everything had reset end everything worked as normal. This was not a long down hill so I would have been in serious trouble if it was longer. I assume something overheated and computer shut things off to protect parts and pieces but my thought is that it should have worked as long as I needed it to protect me and the vehicle. Any thoughts?
