Hey folks,

I had my driver's side front wheel bearing replaced over the weekend.

Since I didn't have all the necessary tools (Press etc.), I had a mechanic friend of mine do the work. Everything seemed to go smoothly (I was there the whole time) except for the fact that now the ABS light comes on as soon as the car is moved. If I start the car and keep it in park, the light stays off, however, as soon as I start to drive it, the light comes on at around 1500 or > RPM. I never saw this light stay on until the work was performed. Since the mechanic is a personal friend of mine, I'm trying to resolve the issue before I take it back to him. I haven't taken the tire off yet to see if anything might have been disconnected but I don't remember anything being left that way. Not sure if this might be related, but...thought I'd mention that he used a silvery lube on the slide pins that looked conductive in nature. Aside from that, I can't remember anything else.

All suggestions welcome.

...Drew..

It sounds like a speed sensor to me..... The ABS wont operate if it is going slower than a certain speed (something like 5mph), so it wouldnt be looking for a sensor reading until it reaches that speed..... it could be a bad sensor or something he didnt plug in.......

Makes sense. Probably coming on after the ABS self-check. There is a way to get error codes for the ABS, but not sure how hard it is. You have to get up behind the glove box to count LED blinks from the ABS control module. I don't think conductive lube on the slide pins would make a difference, but if it got between some terminals on a connector, who knows?

Thanks fellas,

Does anyone out there know how to retrieve the error codes? I should be able to get to the unit but knowing how to read it is another story.

..Thanks... Drew...

I would bet money that the mechanic messed up the wheel speed sensor. Either it's disconnected, the wiring broke while being handled or a tooth was broken in the sensor.

There are three speed sensors, one on each front wheel and one in the rear differential.

Drive the car more than 1 min above 20 MPH.

Stop the car, leave it running.

The ABS control unit is located in the passenger side dash above the glove compartment. Pull the glove compartment and look for a flashing led up in there. It will flash a code, pause for about 6 seconds and repeat.

code 5 - LH front speed sensor6 - RH front7,8 - Rear

1-4 broken accuators9,10 - relays 16 - control unit.
