I'm trying to talk my friend out of spending a load of money on adding abs to his car. He wants to spend $1000 for parts and extra for labor to add abs saying it'll help with preventing lock up.

I'm trying to tell him to take the extra money to put it into a nice big brake kit, slotted, and that it'll help dispearse heat which would help more.

He says a big brake kit would only make the car lock up worse and that you have to have abs to prevent that from happening.

I know I'm not completely right on this but is there anyone that can help me out here?

Your friend is right.

Bigger brakes = more braking torque = easier to lock up wheels.

However I don't see installing ABS as the solve all to the problem. Especially the older style of ABS on the 240s. If anything he will increase his stopping distances.

If you want good braking then first get good tires.

abs is wonderful but human's right foot can be better. like nismo_freak said abs on 240s are pretty junky its too primative.

the abs on newer cars are pretty nice though like the benzos and Zs.it's like for people that like to really stomp on their brakes without worrying about locking up and getting into an accident.

you don't really need to upgrade to big brakes with slotted/drilled/slit or whatever rotors unless you feel the rotors are getting red hot, or it's not stopping fast enough. really good aftermarket brake pads with good response/long lasting under continous stopping might be needed though since the stocks are only good for regular driving.

Feh, ive never had a problem with stock brakes, and thats with trailbraking, heavy mashing of the brakes, and all that good stuff. and yeah, ABS is for people who don't know how to brake properly to begin with.. not saying its completely horrible to have if you already have it, but its not worth adding if you dont

ABS is banned from racing events like JGTC and many others for a reason, if you have no driving skills get it.

I was sold on the big brake upgrade the first time I rode in a car with it equipped (s13). You can stop on a dime .....just don’t be stupid with the brakes. The stopping ability is amazing especially for a 2700lbs car. Don’t worry about the abs.

Brake pad compound and tire choice play just as big a role as any size rotor or any number of pistons in a given caliper..

You should have been sold on the tires your friend had on his car. That way you could duplicate the performance at half price.

The s13's abs is pure junk... it's just added weight.

Tell your friend to ride in an abs-equipped s13 in the rain, and activate the abs. He'll see what I mean.

The abs makes long intermittent clicks. Modern cars have a distinct grinding sound. Anyone with a competent right foot can pump the brakes faster than an s13's abs.

For the record, my abs got deactivated after I put in my vlsd... so now it's just adding weight.

I dont know how ABS runs on a s13, but I do know ABS on a 02 Durango sucks. It skips like hell on it. Personally I dont like ABS.

Tell him: Learn to brake properly and then get better brakes and tires to stop faster. Friction area helps, a good driver helps more.
