Hey man, don't sweat it... while < $1000 is a good deal, it might be worth the extra bills you'll spend to get a better one later!
Maybe this'll make you feel better...
My roommate searched for almost a year to find a clean FC3S (2nd-gen RX7) for a good price. Everytime he got close, the seller always backed out, demanded more money, or waited until he had gone ALL THE WAY to see the car to tell him it was already sold. All this time, he kept saving money to spend on his eventual car.
So finally, almost a year after he started looking, a listing came up for a clean titled, newly painted FC3S with a rebuilt motor... the price? Exactly what he had geared up to spend: $3500. When we got there, the seller explained that he didn't have a rebuilt motor, but that the "new rotors" he had mentioned were the brake rotors. The engine ran decently when I test drove it, and the seller explained that it tended to overheat... FYI: Overheating = instant death for rotary engines. Anyway, I told my friend it was his call, though the car wasn't worth $3500 to me. He threw down $3500 immediately and started celebrating that he finally had found his car.
To make a long story short, the car overheated three times on the way back to our place (about 30 miles) and a couple days later, we could smell coolant in the exhaust. So, $3500 and a bunch of parts later, the car is toast. And you know what? It's going to be MONTHS before he has the money to rebuild the engine.
Moral of the story? Desperation leads to bad decision making... little problems could actually be symptoms of bigger issues. While a deposit guarentees you the car, make sure the car is really what you want. Sucks that your deal fell through, but don't jump right for the first car you see. Better luck next time, man!
