Ok, I am going to replace my factory speakers in my 240. I have a 96 SE model. It has 6 1/2'' rear and door speakers, and 2 small tweaters in the pillars. It has a factory CD player and factory amp in the truck made by clarion. Anyway i was going to buy 4 new 6 1/2'' infinitys to replace the 4 and just take out the 2 small tweaters in the pillars but the guy at circuit city said i may have a premium sound system because i told him about the factory amps. He said if i do, then i cant just replace the speakers because the aftermarket ones wont work. He said that my stock speakers are probably 8ohm or something like that and they wouldnt work. Does anyone know if this is true? Or can i just replace the factory speakers without doing anything else. Becuase this guy was saying that i would have to get a new deck and rewire everything and i dont want to do that. I want to keep my factory deck.

yea thanks, the search on here sucks. These directions are for an s13. I have an s14 so i dont know if it would be different or not. I still dont understand why they are just bypassing the stock amp. Isnt the amp there for a reason? I dont see why it would sound better bypassing it.

Most of this is the "best I recall" ...

The factory speakers were less than 4 ohm, so just replacing the speakers should be no harm to the factory amps. The speakers are somewhere in the ~1.5 ohm range and thus replacing them with 4 ohm will not damage either the (new) speaker or the (existing) amps.

In all honesty of the guy at CC doesn't "know" he should make guesses, that's what us guys on forums are supposed to do .

You could ohm one of the speakers (with a multi-meter) to find out for sure.

Are you sure it's the speakers going, not the amp?

yes im sure the speakers are bad, i just got finished taking them out and the outer ring around them is dry rotted off. Also i looked on the back and they are 2ohm speakers. So you are saying i can just put in some new speakers that are 4 ohm and it will be fine and sound good? or do i need to bypass the amp like many people are talking about. Also i noticed the like above says its only for the rear speakers, but the door speakers are also 2 ohm.

You can run 4 ohm speakers off an amp designed to run at 2 ohm. If anything, you'll have to turn the volume knob just a little more, no biggie. And it's the cheapest solution .

i talked to people at best buy, CC, and another place tonight and all 3 had different things to say but they all said that it wouldnt work, or it wouldnt sound good, or it would burn up my factory deck. This is starting to piss me off. i just want to get some speakers in really soon. I guess i will just buy some and try it. i just want them to sound good. I think im getting infinity's

You should be able to run some "off the shelf" speakers without much trouble. If you're worried about ruining them, get some cheapo's from WalMart or Radio Shack and try them first.

yea im just going to get the infinity's from CC. I want good speakers. I read on another forum that people just hooked them up to their stock system and they worked. so i will try it and see how it sounds. thanks.
