I remember back in 2000 explaining to my misinformed Democratic freinds that Gore's popular vote win did not "win" the election, very sad that I had to explain it. I think in subsequent elections people have figured out it is which states you win and their related electoral votes that matter. If California didn't lean strongly to the left the Democrats would never have a chance. While the whining in 2000 was rediculous after the fact I think it brought to the forefront a potential quirk in the system. I am suprized with all the outrage over Bush "stealing" the election due to the electoral college system there wasn't a movement to get rid of it and go to the popular vote as the test.I find the system a little strange but I am not 100% in favor of losing it. If every vote truly mattered I doubt elections would have quick results. If a state is obviously going one way or another that level of minutia is avoided and the electoral votes are awarded. If it was based on popular vote it would be crucial to tally every single solitary vote. that is not a bad thing but it would be very time consuming and demand a level of accuracy, security and oversight that America seems incapable or more honestly unwilling to put in place. In this age of information the fact that votes are so easily falsified is inexcusable but it is how it is and to go away from the electoral college system would make such fraud even more lucrative. What a shame.

Abolishing the electoral college may well be on the short list of a 60-seat Democratic Senate majority.

If the United States went to a pure popular vote in Presidential elections, the Republicans would assuredly never put another person in the White House ever, ever, ever again.

For whatever reason, switching to a purely popular vote appears to traditionally garner more GOP support than Democratic, even though it would be a death knell for the former. Never figured that one out....
