I too was wondering what it was. I did some googling and came across the following video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nMw0EfqFeISo, the impression I'm getting is that when accelerating and the wheel is spinning, the brakes will kick in to stop the wheel from spinning so that traction can be regained quicker. And then when coasting, it works like a slower ABS?Assuming the animation video is indeed an animation of the ABLS system, then I believe us OG '08 Rogue owners have ABLS too. Here's a vid of my Rogue in which you can see the system working in a downhill situation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omX28uM7_i4 And I do believe I felt the ABLS system kicking in when going up that same hill. I wasn't sure what it was at the time, but after looking into the ABLS thing, I do believe that's what it was.
EDIT: Okay, looking in my 08 Owner's manual under the VDC, "The VDC system uses an Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) function to improve vehicle traction. The ABLS system works when one of the driving wheels is spinning on a slippery surface. The ABLS system brakes the spinning wheel, which distributes power to the other drive wheel. If the vehicle is operated with the VDC OFF switch pushed and the VDC system turned off, all VDC systems will be turned off. The ABLS system and ABS will still operate with the VDC system off. If the ABLS system is activated, the “SLIP” indicator will blink and you may hear a clunk noise and/or feel a pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and is not an indication of a malfunction."So yes, us OG '08 Rogue owners have ABLS too.
