Well on Tuesday my left front brake started grinding so I took it in and had the front brake pads and rotors replaced with OEM's from Joe at Scottsdale. Now my mechanic pointed out to me that my front brake calipers are leaking. Aaaah! This is not a cheap fix. Local dealer quoted me $630 apiece, mechanic quoted me $520 and Joe quoted me $481 each with a $120 credit for sending him my old ones.

My question is this: can I get the old ones rebuilt for a decent price? I would think I could or else I don't see any reason he would want my old parts. Also, is buying used calipers a bad idea. I searched car-part.com and found some in the $125 range and I'm hoping this would be sufficient. I'm not looking for these to last another 250k, probably about 50k will do. If neither of these is an option, does anyone have any other ideas for me? I do not want to buy them new if they are going to be 360 each. That's way too much money considering the other things I'm doing to the car this summer. Anyways, just let me know.

Thanks,

Nick

Get the rebuilt ones or junk yard ones and the inexpensive rebuild kits to have a set of spares.

I rebuilt mine a little while back and so far no leaks. It is tricky, but it can be done with a little patience and mess. However, as Q45tech pointed out, T3 does not rebuild them in-house for liability reasons on such a critical component. There is a brake seal kit from Joe that comes with the caliper seals that I'm guessing are at the root of your problem. It's time for all the 13-year-old seals to start failing I guess, but feel good yours lasted so long. I was barely past 200k when mine went.Buying used calipers are bad IMO...no idea how they've been stored...maybe just sitting in a box, dry...just waiting to put you right back where you are now or worse off even.

I couldn't believe the price the dealer wanted for calipers either. The Infiniti parts guy referred my to a local brake parts rebuilder. Got a rebuilt for around $50 exchanged. The caliper says Sumitomo, the rebuilder says they are the same part used on a particular Toyota pickup, maybe on other vehicles as well.

Yeah... I've heard that about the Toyota P/U crossover too. I think I'd look for a good remanufactured caliper from A-1 Cardone in that situation - or take the time to buy the kit from Joe and spend a weekend in the garage cussing and rebuilding...

Sumitomo is a huge Japanese conglomerate, and I thought they were the manufacturer of the stock Q calipers. My calipers, which I believe to be original, are stamped Sumitomo as well.

Mine are Sumitomo as well. I only noticed it because I recently purchased a set of sumitomo 18" tires so the name brand became familiar..... found out they are partnered with Dunlop.

On the brake seals rebuild... whatever you do, get it right. The hardest part is putting in back the split ring that holds in the main boot from which the piston protrudes. It was a bit*h getting it to seat properly. ...Drew....

No snap ring on the fronts, only on the rears.

Yes, the fronts are fairly easy, the rears are just plain unfair.
