I have a 1990 Q45 with approximately 86k on it. I've owned it for about 1 year and this noise has been present for almost the duration. I just got the vehicle out of the body shop, got the 2 front quarter panels rolled and now not only do i have the whine, I also have what sounds like the valves clicking as i put stress on the engine picking up. To add to this, I now have a wicked vibration that comes from the rear end which makes my steering wheel vibrate as well. This has all been since I've dropped off my car for 10 days at the body shop. All tires on the car are less than 3 weeks old. I just replace the factory suspension with tokico struts/shocks and added camber plates on the front end. Before I dropped the car off, it ran like a charm and had none of the above problems besides the whining. I really love the vehicle, I bought it off a guy that just arrive out here and was looking to sell it. I bought it for 5k with 2 sets of wheels. I'm starting to wonder if i got myself in too deep with the car due to the overbearing costs of repairs here in hawaii. Any Ideas? I searched!

First order of business - Chain guides.

If they haven't been replaced, it's a ticking time bomb.

I'd be asking the bodyshop manager if anyone drove the car. Sounds almost like someone might have damaged the undercarriage.

Ever see "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"?

Yeah.

I actually topped off the tank as a last order of business before i dropped the car off. When I picked it up, it was under 3/4 tank. I talked to the manager who told me that they only moved the car from the parking spot to the shop and that was it. Now the ticking that sounds like valves is not continuous, it only occurs or seems to occur right at the shifting of gears. At the shift of gears, I can't hear it or it just quiets down.

I have registered with Q45.org and had a conversation with Wes and he did make me aware of the chain guides. I have since been active in getting quotes to have them changed out with the going average out here being $3000- 3500. Is this outrageous or what because I've talked to some folks out in Cali that told me it should'nt run anymore than $1200.00.

Read the articles in Infniti Mechanic. Most dealers insist on replacing chains also, which increases the cost.

Camber plates? Any pictures?

Hate to say it but it sounds like someone drove the **** out of your car and probably damaged your drive shaft. Put it on stands and examine the underneath. Did you take note of the mileage? VERY bad idea to fill up the tank before giving it to a shop as the car becomes the errand/joyride vehicle of the week. When I drop mine off which is very rare, I keep the needle just above empty just for the purpose of dissuading notions of any excursions in my vehicle.

I'd be letting the shop manager know that I have proof that the car was driven more than he's letting on.

Give him one chance to admit to it, find out who he reports to, then walk out and say, "You'll be hearing from my attorney."
