**TRUE STORY**

A guy just came in the store says he needed a fuel filler hose for a 06 Impala

I said, "I got it for $30"

he says, "alright how much if I pull it?"

I reply, "$10"

Then he thinks about it for a minute and says, "I'll go ahead and let yall pull it I don't work for less than $28 an hour"

At that time I immediately (as if it was an instinct) pointed at him and with a serious face and I said, "and that is whats wrong with America!"

He immediately blushed so much to the point that I actually kind of felt bad for doing what I did... After a few moments I came to the conclusion that what I did and said is perfectly right and completely true at the other end of our counter there was another customer that my dad was getting a part for in the back I could tell that this guy agreed with what I did. The guy that I pointed to just handed over his $30 ((without getting his $0.56 in change) and in a casual manner walked out of our store... I am guessing he is still going to come get the part when its ready??? :gotme

This guy is one of the many reasons why half of the things that we use and buy everyday are made overseas

Thoughts? Comments? Am I right? Not that I am worried I just want to know what everyone else thinks.

Those are some of the worst kinds of people. People that make good money and strut their stuff like a big shot. Why the eff would anyone else give a f***. It really just pissed me off just reading that. You are absolutely right. Complaining about $30 tells me I hope he spends eternity in hell upside down under 4 feet of rotting dogs**t.

How long does this part take to pull? Whats you hourly rate? I need numbers for this to make sense.

Gonna have to agree with this. I see nothing wrong with that guy's comment. I wish I could be so lucky to claim that I don't work for less than $100 an hour (I know that's more than he said, but the same principle applies). Also, after paying for the labor to pull the part, I'm assuming you make more by pulling the part yourself than if the customer pulls it, correct? So you should probably be thanking him!

Like S133P3R said, yes it depends on the numbers.

For simplicity's sake, lets say it takes him an hour to pull it, the opportunity cost for him to pull it (and not work) would be $28.

This would be for a relative gain (negative loss) of $20 if he pulls and you don't.

So for him to pull it, he would incur an economic loss of $28 - $20 = $8

This is the part where everyone screws up - the numbers above assume he is easily able to work another hour.

If he has a set schedule, with a set number of hours of work, and can't add another, his opportunity cost would be what he values his liesure time as.

And then it gets more confusing because if he pays you $20 for a service, he pays tax on that - aprox 10%, so it would be $22

And if he works another hour, he gets income tax off that so it would be $21 (28 x (1-.25)) (I looked up his probable tax braket rate)

So once we factor this in, he would be making an economic profit of $22 - $21= $1 by getting you to pull it (assuming it takes him an hour)

And that doesn't really get us anywhere...

I still think it's impolite to brag about how much you make.

My $0.02...

There was absolutely no reason for doing what you did, even if you do think it was a douchey comment; especially as an employee of this establishment.

Whether you agree or disagree with how this man spends his money, (or how he apparently "brags" about his income/worth), you're not in any place to make such a claim - an insulting one at that.

You embarrassed him - and in front of other men for that matter. In my opinion what you did was far worse than what he did. As a matter of fact, I don't see anything wrong with what he did. Hell, there are plenty of times where I'd rather pay a professional more to do the work rather than myself - even if I am capable of doing said job. Not because I'm lazy, simply because there are some jobs I just don't take pleasure in doing. Body work for example - I despise body work - it's not that I can't do it or am to lazy to do it, I simply do not enjoy doing it. If I can pay a body shop $50.00 to prep and paint a piece, then to me, I'd pay for the time they save me.

You run a fine establishment.
I'd feel comfortable going there.

Anyways...
Even if he did act sort of snobbish, I don't get why you decided to go maximum douche on him.
There is a business like yours around here. Although, with people that act like a d!ck even if all you say is hello.
I guess you won't be getting any more of his business in the future.

You guys are right. I feel like a douche. Its weird to because I never do anything like that.

After reading what you guys had to say I decided to call him because I felt I should give him an apology.

Heres what happened:

I said, "Hello this is Mark I wanted to let you know that I am sorry for what took place yesterday and your filler hose is ready"

He said (to my surprise), "Man its all good I was having a rough day yesterday I am sorry if I came off a little rough, thank you for actually pointing it out to me even though, I was a little embarrassed for my actions but you are certainly right in a way"

I said, "No I was completely out of line and extremely disrespecful"

He said, " man don't worry about it *kinda chuckled*, trust me I am an easy going guy everyone makes mistakes so I forgive you"

I said, "I said thank you for your business I am going to give you the filler hose and refund your money and put $30 to your next purchase"

He said, " Thats awesome because I was about to ask to see if you had......."

I said, "well today is your lucky day because I have it and its already off the vehicle come get it with your filler neck"

He said, "Im on the way see ya in a little bit"

Nice work. Admitting you were wrong/out of line is not an easy thing to do. Apologizing for it is even harder. I hope you earned some repeat business for clearing that one up. :bigthumb:

Thanks!

My grandpaw (may he rest in peace) always told me and my dad that any customer is a good customer.

And he is 100% correct.

I'd pay 20 dollars extra to make sure it was pulled correctly.

I wouldn't make the comment of hourly wage, but I'd pay another 20 bucks to not have to pull it.

I'd pull the part myself. Why? save 20 bucks for gas, which is like 4 gallons. :D

Good job making it work out!.

The rules to follow (if you do this, you get repeat customers all the time :yesnod):

Rule 1. The Customer is always right.
Rule 2. If the Customer is wrong, see Rule 1.
