So we finally convicted a 'terrorlst'

http://www.washingtonpost.com/....html

Cliff notes:Found guilty of providing material support for terrorismWe were prosecuting Osama's....driverNot guilty of conspiracy counts relating to planning attacks on the USAllowed to use coerced confessionsAllowed to use hearsayAllowed secret evidence that neither he nor counsel could challengeNo unanimous jury verdict required, only 4 of 6Pentagon selected the Jury poolIts irrelevant because they plan on holding him indefinitely anyways.

How can we make any claim to be a nation that supports freedom and peoples rights when we treat our enemies like the North Vietnamese Army?

EDIT:typo

oh and it gets even better!!! They sentenced him to....5.5 years in prison, hes already served 5 so I guess that would mean hes free in 6 months right?

or not...Quote »After Salim Haman serves his sentence, he could still be kept as an enemy combatant at Guantanamo Bay.

He has been imprisoned at the U.S. military detention center since 2002 and has been credited with 61 months served. That means that he has five months left to serve.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said after the verdict Wednesday that Hamdan was now a "convicted war criminal" and that he was "no longer considered an enemy combatant."

But on Thursday, Whitman said Hamdan's status would revert to "enemy combatant" when his sentence is completed.

As an enemy combatant, Hamdan can be held indefinitely by the United States, although he would be eligible to appeal to an administrative review board to determine whether his status as an enemy combatant should continue.[/quote]This is seriously just pathetic...coming up on 7 years into the world on terror adn the best we can do is convict the driver of the guy we're after of...being his driver!!!

Remember back when they made a huge deal abotu this? Like Osama was only incehs away?

He DID got caught driving a car loaded with missiles. Giving him 5.5 years of jail is just a way of saying he should not be in jail as he has been in custody for 5 years already.

People who help mass murderers kill people, transport weapons for mass murder, etc. seem to get less punishment than a drunk driver.

This is more pathetic than the Bali b0mber making an appeal because he 'might' suffer when he is executed.

The court held that he was a combatant and that those missiles were likely for use against US soldiers, which is a perfectly logical defense. Kind of like prosecuting one of our soldiers for carrying bullets for use against the enemy. Part of being a soldier at war is killing other soldiers.

So someone can carry bombs and missiles and then just claim it was intended for millitary targets? Like the missiles were programmed and made only to blow up millitary targets. Now Hamas can claim all those civilian deaths from their motors and missiles were un-intended targets.

Actually, yes. If he isn't carrying those weapons into a market area or someplace where civilians congregate. It's all about the intended target. Unfortunately, in a war (conflict) the targets can sometimes be US soldiers, and that isn't illegal. (remember, we're trying our best to kill them too.)
