A/T transmission trouble

1990 240sx wont shift from 2nd to 3rd. The shop that has it says the instrument cluster is bad. Does this make sense? Diagnostic calls out the speed sensor, but the mechanic says it is receiving a signal from the sensor but not from the cluster to the computer

does ur speedo work? search fail safe mode i think thats whats wrong with urs

The speedo seemed to work fine when I took it to the shop, but when I went to get it, as soon as I turned it on the speedo pegged, and the fuel meter also pegged.

well let put this way ur speed sensor doesnt have to do anything with ur gear changing i drove my old maxima with a broken sensor for 3 month and nothing no problem,, and now my 240sx cluster needle is going nuts now,,, ill say 40 or more and up and down at random and my transmission shift fine... take to other mech they dont know sh99t

well theres a vehicle speed sensor and a trans speed sensor and on some vehicles up to three speed sensors (chysler). They do essentially the same thing, but in your case i believe its just the vehicle speed sensor which on an automatic controls your speedometer signal AS WELL as telling the trans control module when to shift. Idk why the fuel gauge pegged but i can tell you with certaintly the cluster is not your problem. I'd hit up a local trans shop where they can sort u out a speed sensor for a 240 is like 100 bucks idk about a maxima. good luck -mike-

well i dont have the maxima she was murder by a guy eating the red light...but i got one from a junkyard install in my at the time 4 50 dollar...

U got a bad valve body at the transmission, possible shift valve 2-3 stuck.
