I have a 91 240 base, 24 with RE4R01 Auto transmission....and a month ago while driving to work I ran over a rough patch of road and the transmission just up and quit. No reverse or OD to 1st. I have searched high and low and still have not found a reason why it just quit. I have searched forums, read the FSM, used my own knowledge of autos and still am coming up short.

I am not looking to do a 5 sp swap right now...I dont have the time or the money to invest in the 240 just yet. Plus my wife drives this car. The flash codes indicate both shift solenoids are getting improper voltage or shorted. I have tested the resistance and voltage in the wiring, all from the FSM and appears to be good...all good readings so far. I am still looking at all options before dropping valve body. If anyone has had a similar situation like this and has corrected the issue (not by doing a swap) please let me know. Also if anyone in Eastern NC (Jacksonville) has an auto transmission that isnt a boat anchor and still works, by all means let me know. Starting to get really freakin cold riding a motorcycle to work.

Thanks all!

Kenny

So the trans just free revs or is like stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear? If its stuck in a hire gear I would suspect something tcu oriented. Rather the tcu just went bad our something shorted it. I would check the section of wiring behind the passenger fender. If all is good than maybe the tcu? I've got an extra one.

I can put the transmission in Reverse, Drive, 2nd or 1st and it will not do a thing. Its as if I am in Park or Neutral and just revving the engine. The fluid and filter were changed twice since owning this 240 in August. The first was when I purchased the car and then changed it out again shortly afterwards to just ensure it was clear fluid. Everything was good. In the FSM I was troubleshooting the TCU and connections, everything was showing good readings.

Now when you say check behind the passenger fender, where specifically are you talking about? Inside the engine compartment or inside the car under the glove box? As for the TCU...how much are you asking? Thanks for your input!

The wiring I'm talking about is literally above your passenger tire in the fender well. If there are any damaged wires it would be from your tire rubbing through or just plain wacking that area. I could do like $30 shipped. I know for a fact it works because i pulled it from my car when it was an auto. my car is an 89 so I would make sure the numbers match, as I'm just throwing that out there as a possibility. Id check those wires first.

I just inspected the wheel well splash guard. It is good. No rubbing marks or anything. The harness is good too. Let me call around tomorrow to some of my friends if they have a good tcu. If I dont hear anything tomorrow from anyone I will hit you up for the TCU. Its been a while since I swapped parts so can you school me on "matching the numbers?" Thanks. I swear I feel like a born again noob!!

There should be numbers on the tcu itself, as long a they match you should be good.
