You may have read that Hillary and Obama have proposed a summer holiday for gas tax. The support for this idea appears to be almost non-existent. There are too many opinions of this to quote the entire article here, but the following link will take you to the full story.

So, would a summer tax cut help with gas prices?

Actually it's Hillary and McCain that support it, not Obama. I have to agree with Obama on this one, it's a terrible idea to suspend the tax. Roads are already in bad enough condition, so losing that money is just gonna mean we need to make it up from somewhere else. And for the 3 months the tax is suspended, most people are going to save less than 40 dollars. Big whoop. I say keep it and come up with a real solution to the problem, not some short term "vote for me" politcal fix.

Whoops. I get the three of them confused all the time. Obama is the one with the tan right. Thanks for pointing out my error.

Obama's the tan one, Hillary is the crazy cat lady looking one, and McCain is the one that looks like he's been dead for 3 years.

Oh one more tidbit about this topic, Hillary wants to pay for it with a windfall tax on oil companies, which would probably pass the loss in profits on to us, and McCain has no plan on how to make up the money. That's another reason I don't support it.

Windfall tax against the oil companies are such bullshat. When are they going to windfall tax Wal-Mart or Microsoft and others who make much greater profit margins?

Bingo.

As for me, I'm renting a V8-powered 15-passenger conversion van and I'm gonna drive it (exceeding the speed limit of course) straight out to CA...

...to visit Bob. And the beach.

So true.

As a side note, AZ's roads are some of the best I've driven, and there's only 5 states in the contiguous Union I haven't driven in.

I think it would be good for diesel only - give the truckers a break and moderate shipping costs.

Not for gasoline, though. We have to keep the pressure on, or no one will conserve. We need to reduce demand so the price will come back down.

Calif adds another 28 to 32 cents a gallon as sales tax. Maybe the idea of not charging truckers any tax on their fuel (or rebating it at years end) is something that should be looked at. Knock another dollar off their per gallon cost and maybe buying food won't require taking out a second mortgage.

Unless something changed, Cali charges:

-.18/gal cali tax- 1.25% county - .12 state UST fee

Then again, maybe Ahnold should increase gas taxes to .75 in order to help them dig out of their defecit.

There is anywhere from 7.25% to 8.25% sales tax added to the price of a gallon of gas. This sales tax is also levied on the taxes included in the price of the gallon.

the then there is a Smog abatement fee of $8.00 levied on all of the 20+ million cars registered in CA annually. Plus a ad valorem tax on the car, plus a fee for operating it on public highways. About $275/yr for my G.I'd guess that the CA DMV collects an average of $120 per car, x 20,000,000 cars, per year. That's about 2 1/2 billion. The sales tax is split between the state, county and cities, but still, 7.25 to 8.25 % of the 12th largest economy in the world is a nice sum. Now, add 1.0 to 1.2 % for real property annually, (average price home is probably 400k), plus state income tax, and proceeds from an active lottery. CA has more money than Arnold realizes. His plea of "we're broke" is nothing more than creative accounting.

I paid over $2000.00 in sales tax on my G alone. Sucks to buy a car in CA. You can typically add 10% to the car price to get it out the door. (DMV, Lic fees, and tax) We are seriously considering moving to Oregon.

If you move you don't have a CARB-box to preach from

True, temporarily anyway. I see a great future for CARB and the other 49 states in the near future. Heck, if this economy doesn't take a turn for the better in the next 6 months or so, I may have to apply for a job at CARB.
