You can't shorten the rod, if you did that you would have a big issue with compression.
What you could do is source a crankshaft from a KA20DE in Japan and install that along with it's rods. I would use the stock 89mm bore pistons, and this will give you an effective 2.1L engine (~2140cc).
The configuration would give you a good amount more on the top end as far as rev limit, and overall engine response would be increased due to the lighter mass.
Though this is assuming the deck heights are tolerable between the two.
I honestly would stick with an SR20DET in this instance.
