Well im not really around the z forum that much. but my friend swapped his transmission from auto to manual on his 88 300zx. I was just wondering were does the wire does the wires come from that go to the speed sensor. if you guys could give me links to wiring diagram or anything it will appreciated. Thanks

it's a bit more complicated, if the car has digital gauges then it uses a speed sensor, if the car has analog it's got a speeedo cable, I'm guessing the car had digital and the donor trans came form a car with analog, so you'll need the speed sensor off a manual trans car with digital gauges

You take the speedometer sensor off the old transmission's speedometer pinion gear assembly and screw it onto the speedometer pinion gear assembly of the manual transmission.

There is absolutely nothing complicated about it. The only issue you may have is if the pinion gear itself is the wrong number of teeth because the transmission came from a different model. If that is the case, you also have to swap the gears between the two pinion gear assemblies.

The automatic assemblies will not fit in the manual transmissions.

well its the other way around. the donor car had a digital cluster and my friends has a analog one. so there is a speed sensor on the bell housing (i think thats were it is) and i need to know how to hook it up with analog cluster.

Show me where I said anything about what cluster it came with? It doesn't matter. Go back and re-read it and tell me what part you're confused with.

the speed sensor for the digital cars attaches to a short speedo cable, there are no sensors on the bellhousing

Maybe it wasn't clear, but if you read the posts, there is no speedometer cable on the 87-89 cars with the analog dash.

I did not know this, I've only had first hand experience dealing with 85, 86 and 87, at any rate do what he says, he's the expert, and the speedo should be near the tailshaft on about every rear drive trans, I believe the s13-14 5 speed is the same as the na z31's save for the front case and perhaps the gearing

i'm sorry. I don't wish to undermine the moderators, but... as you know, I HATE seeing wrong information propagate throgh the internet...

SO....Please read: if you don't understand , I suggest you send the car to someone who knows better.

Please don't confuse the issue. There is nothing mystical, magical, or confusing about this swap. He already has all the parts he needs.

1. pinion gear assembly. - came with the new transmission.2. speedometer sensor. - came with the car.

Take the speedometer sensor off the pinion gear assembly out of the old transmission. Unscrew the sensor off it. Screw this sensor onto the speedometer pinion gear assembly of the new transmission.

The only issue is whether or not the number of teeth of the new pinion gear assembly is correct. And that will depend on what model/year the new transmission came from. And all that means is you swap the actual pinion gear in the assembly.

no sweat paul, I was unaware that they had changed that much, I kinda thought the sensor on the end of a short cable was a wierd way to do things, looks like you got him the needed info, you are the Z31 guru and your input is appresicted, thanks
