Looks like A Rod is heading to the Yanks in a trade with the Rangers sending Alfonso Soriano and prospects to the Rangers in exchange for A Rod.

The Yanks now have perhaps the best hitting lineup in the league. And now they face the Red Sox who have perhaps the best pitching in the league.

Should make for an interesting season in the AL East.

Perhaps? Jeter, Giambi, Lofton, Sheffield, Williams, Matsui, Posada, Lamb...

Pitching: Mussina, Brown, Contreras, Vasquez, Lieber

The Yanks have some pretty good starting pitchers, but their bullpen is lacking. The bull pen was their problem last year too.

This puts their payroll to over $190 million next season. By comparison, the Oakland A's are worried about their bulging payroll, and could not keep the likes of Miguel Tejada because of it. Thier payroll ~$60 million. Tell me that's fair... HA!

Thank god we are rid of him...I never particularly cared for A-Rod, or his playing. For some reason, whenever I go to Ranger games, that guy ****s up.

Yeah, but does it really matter? If we are going to suck, there's no reason to pay A-Rod as much money as we were just to still suck. Might as well do it as cheaply as possible...

I kinda enjoy the Bronx Zoo. George is acting like an idiot again, collecting overpriced hi-maintenance whiny stars for positions he didn't need to strengthen, and not addressing the glaring pitching problems. I'm not a Yankee fan, but I do know when George takes a more active role, the manager gets replaced. I doubt Torre will finish out the year.

The funnies thing is that the Yankees got a hell of a deal for him. They are actually going to be paying Jeter more than ARod I think. The Rangers have to fork out a bunch of money over the next 6 years or so and then even more about 20 years down the road. They worked out some weird deal where the Rangers are fooring a portion of his salary.

At this point their bullpen is sufficient w/ Karsay, Heredia, Gordon and Quantrill setting up for the best closer in the game still - considering their good starting rotation and the runs support they're looking to get this season

I heard that. I also heard that the difference between the yankee's A-Hol... I mean A-Rod deal and the bosox A-Rod deal was about 2 mill per year over the length of the contract. While that's a ton of money to you or me, it's pretty small when you're talking about team payrolls as big as the Yanks and Sox. It'll be interesting to see how the yankee's fare with so many huge egos.

Sounds about right. Hard to believe that the Red Sox couldn't have come up with another 2 mil a year for 8 years.

It will be very interesting to see how Torre handles the locker room. There are a bunch of egos on that team now. They went from mostly homegrown talent to mostly bought talent. Homegrown talent is always better in my opinion. But, I still think that Torre is the best manager in baseball in will be able to handle everybody. I guess that is as long as they are winning and Big George doesn't fire him.

I'm not sure I agree with Torre being the best manager in baseball. I don't see the Royals or Tigers going to a world series with Joe Torre at the helm. He's a good manager, no doubt, but not the best. Managing a team of all-stars at every single position except 2nd base gives him a big advantage.

I think you're right about home-grown talent being better, but it doesn't appear George shares that philosophy anymore. I think he covets other team's stars more than his own. He let home-grown Pettite go. I think if Pettite were on another team, George would have backed the Brink's truck up to his door. I also seehomegrown Boinee (Bernie) Williams collecting splinters with Sheffield and Lofton soon whining to get more playing time. Should be an interesting year.

A great manager has to have some talent. The Royals and Tigers really have none. I look back to the yankees world Series run in the mid to late 90's when they only had a couple all-stars on their team. Torre got the most out of players like Brosius, Hayes and Girardi. Jeter was still very young at the time and Bernie was still a work in progress. He built them up to where they are today. Maybe good ole Joe has lost some of it, Jack Mckeon did a helluva job last year with the Marlins.

I really don't know if the Yankees have any real prospects left in the minors. It seems like most of them have been involved in trades the past few years.

There are going to be alot of egos that need soothing this year. I'm not too sure how Sheffield will do and then Kenny Lofton is getting up there in years. The biggest question to me is still their pitching. How will Vazques do? Is Brown really healthy?

I agree. Pitching is their big question mark. Mussina is their only proven big timer. I think Brown is fragile and has been injured more than he's been healthy. We'll see. The Yanks' AA affiliate (Trenton Thunder) is close to my house. I didn't see any real standouts this past season. Though Jeter/Boinee/Contreras all did rehab starts down here last season. Kinda neat.

Yeah, the Cubs rotation looks really good. I also really like the BoSox and the A's rotations.

.....very short sited about Kevin Brown, maybe you should go back a few years and study those 'big time' performances(coughworldseriescough)...and injury's? ::Shrug:: he did pitch more innings than Petite didnt he?? Besides a low 2. ERA for a team that was NOT good at all in LA.... And Injured more than healthy?? Thats rediculous, and not to mention, not true.

Hmm....im curious then to why EVERYONE knows they have improved their bullpen, and their starting pitching is what took a hit...they have a pretty solid bullpen...and its pretty obvious that that starting five will not be the starting five at the end of the season...there are a lot of free agent pitchers in 05, so expect to see a lot of moves before the deadline by teams who are out of the playoff races....like usual.

Going out and getting Brown and Vasquez as well as suring up the bullpen was to address that pitching issue....not to mention, got younger...

Just a quick point...i know there arent many Boston fans in this thread *****ing or whatever...but they are all over otherplaces...but my point is this:....The boston red sox had the best offense in baseball last year...they broke all the records for runs scored and homeruns(i believe), YET, they go after AROD and its no issue, to stack the 'best offense in baseball", but the Yankee's, who were down in the pack, get AROD, then all of a sudden its "NOT FAIR" or whatever they are crying about now...i just find it very ironic...besides the fact it is 'fair', unless there is some sort of hidden fairness section of the MLB rule books or whatever

I think its funny now that the Red SOx organization is saying that a salary cap needs to be in place.

Isn't Brown 39 yrs old? I suppose that's gettng younger compared to Clemens. I'm sure Brown is a fine pitcher when healthy, but I'll be happy to revive this thread as soon as he goes on the DL in May. I personally think Pettite was a better pitcher (and more reasonably priced) than Brown. I'm not a yankee fan (I'm actually a long suffering Met fan) and I don't keep stats on Kevin Brown, but from what I read and heard, he's injury prone. And on a side note, I believe George is fielding a team without a left handed starting pitcher. Very odd.

Most people would say the most important stats to look at are going to be Innings pitched, and era (record is very reliant on the team you play for, ie. la vs. ny, so not a good indicate) but you would find that Brown is consistantly going to give you more innings and hold teams to lower batting average and ERA, as well as being a very good strikeout pitcher...i dont think there is really any arguement that Brown is a better pitcher, i mean, yankee fans do love petite, but Brown is a number 1 starter..and a better pitcher overall. Petite is a good pitcher, im not argueing that (or for the money). Brown is not more injury prone than Pedro.
