here is my crazy story i though i'd tell you guys so maybe some of you can learn and maybe laugh at me i bought my first 240 (91 s13) about a year ago and after it was smoged i thought it needed i little more power so when i moved to sac i got to talking to some local drifters and they all said go with the sr. but one of my buddies only wanted $1000 plus my ka and transmission for the rb20. so i did and the intaltion begain.(let me just say nicoclub was my best friend for about 3 months) the wiring had been already cut up and screwed with, and i had no money or else i would have had carl fix it up. after awhile of wiring we were ready to start it but as soon as i hooked up the batt, the car starts cranking on its own. so i redid all the wiring then it worked cranking it wise, but it had no power at all. so after hours on nico i found out it was the maf signal wire. then i got it running a little better then right after i drove it home the waterpump went out on me . when i got to replacing that i had to redo my timing which took awhile. and i removed the cas and lost the spot it went in so when i got it all back together it didn't want to "move" when i stepped on the gas. i then took it to a performanc shop and ran it on the dyno $125(128hp 9.8:1a/f) and all they said was that it was my ecu. but after more time on nico i found out it was the cas. so i fixed it to the right spot, then on my test drive a honda hatch pulls up next to me at the stoplight and is revving at me. so i smashed the gas and toasted him w/ a big smile on my face because i knew my car was running good. then about a month later my buddie from my home town comes up and he wants a ride to san fransisco but i had to go to school so i let him take it. it ran good alll the way there but when he was coming back, about a block away from my house, the timing belt broke. then he cranked it several times bending all my valves because its an interferance motor. so now i'm broke, have no car, and my so called friend ditched out and wont talk to me cause he f***ed up my car ....................life sucks....but it happens

welcome to the baller world of RB! The timing belt water pump and idler and tensioner pulleys ate the main ingridents to change when getting your motor. Now u if irememberan rb20 is non interference. So if i was u id get me the $20 timing belt from Canada or Australia put it on and do a compression check. Check your oil pan for dents sounds like oiling issues

I' leaned out from stupidity and cooked a few pistons. I underestimated how much power my new turbo was making. This is my second RB20 motor, and I'm currently putting together a new rb20 to be my 3rd. If I could pick one time that would make everything the hardest it could possibly be, it would be now.

If I can say anything to try to help... You get better at it. Everytime you pull that motor and drop it back in, you get faster and faster. At this point, if I had a spare motor to drop in, I could have pulled it the day it blew, and had the new motor in by that night, and maybe make it to the track in time for a couple runs! Stay attatched to the car and you'll stay motivated.

Good luck.

I believe I paid $25 - $29 for the OEM T-belt here:http://www.nismoparts.com/catalog/?section=756

Call Shay, good guy and they ship quick.

I hate to break your heart but the RB20DET is an interference engine. Not by much, but it is. From what I've read you can put a thicker head gasket on and eliminate the interference. That's how slight it is.

But, for the money, I'd still slap a belt on there and see if you got lucky. I mean you're gonna need it anyway. I have seen interference engines toss the timing belt and not cause any damage. Not often, but it does happen.

Hope you get it fixed up man.
