I think that if they are going to require us to maintain stock appearing exhaust systems that emit stock levels of noise they should pay to have each one custom fabricated for us

No laws against making horsepower at least

My best idea is either a OEM exhaust thats been modified to accept a larger diameter pipe or simply the OEM exhaust with a cut-out for those situations.

I installed my Borla dual-tip exhaust today. Almost an exact fit. From the cat to the headers, the flange sealed nicely, but between the cat and the Borla pipe there was a little gap. The flange seemed a little crooked on the pipe. We fixed it by trying different gaskets. It is pretty quiet! I can hear my tires now when I drive on the highway. I also seemed to notice a difference in performance. It responds nicely to the gas pedal now. Doesn't hesitate like it did before. Acceleration feels smoother. Now we'll see if it passes emissions in August....

Your car doesn't have to pass emissions, in Virginia it's just a visual inspection. As long as you have a cat and a muffler you're fine, I've passed for the past three years with a 3" downpipe to 3" HKS Hi Power cat-back.

I did however get my first ticket for it last Friday, I plan on fighting it though. The law is a double standard, I suggest you print out a copy and have it in your glove box so you know your rights.

Question. Can VA enforce their laws on non- VA residents? I live in NC but drive up to VA to go to King's Dominon about 5 times a year. Haven't had any problems yet, but this thread got me thinking about it. I have a header and the HKS Hi Power, and I am anything but quiet going down the highway.

Virginia is a Police State. Yes, you will get a ticket if caught in their state with it. This only applies to imports. /end sarcasm

Raz, this VA law seems to only be enforced in the high money areas of Virginia such as those located in northern Virginia (NoVA). I live in a county that does not require emissions and it seems that the counties that require emissions also enforce the exhaust law. It's just another crap money making law which also allows a cop a pull you over for "probable cause" so they can check out other things with your car. I commute through two of the problem areas like Prince William and Fairfax counties but along I-95. To tell you the truth, I always go very easy on the gas when I am around a cop so as to alert him/her. My BRM exhaust is actually quite loud when I get heavy on the gas pedal.

I recently got pulled over in my Kouki which has a BRM 2.5" w/ 22" res and dual tips, but he didn't pull me because of my exhaust. He pulled me because of my tint which was illegal, but in his words, not illegal enough to write a ticket. He was actually a young officer and a very cool guy it turned out.

Amtk240 you are right on the money. I do have to pass emissions every two years. I had a tough time passing last time. Hopefully, with this new exhaust it will be easier. And yes, the cops are strict in NoVa. I guess it's because of the street racing accidents attracted a lot of press. The Fast and Furious movies didn't help either. Cops won't admit it, but they do target Japanese cars with mods.

By the way I got a speeding ticket in NC (I was driving Honda Element....don't ask!!) a few years back and lost my license here in VA so be careful. I have a perfect +5 record now and I'm trying to keep it that way.

I guess VA differs by city, but I only have to pass a visual exhaust inspection in Hampton Roads.

FWIW, I got pulled over in Southhampton County, right near the NC border. I was actually on my way back to Raleigh when I got pulled over.
