would number 5 on this diagram be what a chilton would call the gasket? i'm getting close to all the replacement parts i need

I'm not really sure why you're using a Chilton's Manual. However, the FSM does appear to call it a gasket.

It says its a spring seat, so I wouldn't know why Chilton would call it a gasket. A gasket is something that is placed between parts to seal gas or fluid. A spring seat is what holds the spring on the strut.

It also calls number 7 a spring seat. And, you can't have TWO upper spring seats. So, it appears that number 5 is the orange 'gasket' that goes between the top strut mount and the body. It's only purpose is to keep metal off of metal and squeeking.

thanks all, especially jerome. the reason i am using a chilton is because i don't have an FSM. the chilton was cheaper and i thought it would serve more purpose

Did you try and save the link? You need to click the link and save the correct FSM It should be a zipped pdf or something.
