I bought Axxis Metal Master brake pads less than a year ago and they already need to be replaced. I know a manual uses more brakes than an automatic but I didn't know they would wear down that quick. Is it just b/c they are "racing" brake pads and the material wears down faster or what. What are your opinions. Thanks,Josh

I also use metal master on all four corners and so far I love them. The performance is great and there is very very little dust and mine has decent life left even after about a year of use. I used Axxis Ultimate before metal master and ultimates wear down sooo much quicker and the dust is just unbearable.

BTW, why do you think that manual uses more brakes than an automatic?

Well when you're coming to a stop most people eventually put it in neutral and just use the brakes to slow down the car as opposed to an auto. which is partially slowed down by the transmission as well as brakes.Josh

Yeah, a poorly driven manual will use more brakes. A properly driven one will use far less than an auto.

actually in auto, the torque converter is still transferring a bit of torque to the wheels and also even during stop, its providing a bit of torque (as opped to manual you have it in neutral and no torque is tranferred to the transmission) thats why the 240s with auto have a bigger MC than the 240s with manual.

In general autos dont have any compression brakeing unless they are in there manuel gear ranges...A one way clutch is used to turn the output shaft of the transmitions so when the wheels start to spin faster then transmission the clutch overruns and no power is transfered...Ive had hawks for the past half a year, maby a little more, and I still got a bit of pad left..

Damn, so ultimates suck? Ive got some coming in the mail along with new brembo blanks soon. They seem to be the next step up from the mm, so I figured what the hell, might as well spend a couple extra bucks. How was the feel with the ultimates? Were they grabbier than the mm? Any advantages at all?

yes they do feel grabbier than MMs, but with the amt of brake dust, fast wear on both pads and rotors, I dont know if its worth it unless you do alot of AutoX

ohh, well yeah, i dont do alot. I just bought them cause they seemed like a step up, and Im sure the brembo rotors will be up to the task. I still would have gone with mm if I would have had this info, but its too late. next time then. Thanks for the info.

the ebc greenstuffs are fabulous for the s13. they have no brake dust, and have even better bite than the axxis, or pretty much any other pad.

I think I'm just going to get some OEM ones from the dealership, they last a lot longer and I never could tell a difference with the MM anyways.Josh

You aren't using the clutch to stop the car, you're using the engine.

If you drive normally you won't. The biggest advantage of MMs is fade resistance. OE brake pads are poo on a track because they fade like a *****.
