Hi, Dennis, et. al.

Has anyone compared "BG44K" to the "Nissan Fuel System Cleaner" (part number is 999MP-FSC00P) that I got from the Infiniti dealer a few days ago? The bottle contains 20oz of something ("Light Petroleum Distillate and Stoddard Solvent" designed for 20 gallons of gas. As I recall, Stoddard solvent is the key ingredient of WD-40, right?

Anyway, the Infiniti service consultant (an ex-Nissan tech for 14 years) said (like I believe too) that the Chevron Techron in places like Auto-zone was pretty worthless, but claimed that the BG44K and the Nissan product were essentially the same and the "Nissan may be better".

So ... my questions: are the BG and Nissan products comparable? The same? Is one better than the other? Comments, please ...

Z

for some reason im thinking the nissan stuff is the same as the lower strength BG stuff. I dont remember what its called but looking at the BG site it might be the CF-5.

I thought I remember tech talking about this..

Stoddard solvent is just the carrier for the detergents, much like the xylene, toluene in 44k...........just less volatile and flammable.

What counts is the actual amount of detergent in 11 ounces even 2 ounces of real detergent is a gigantic amount since gasoline usually has a 1 to 10,000 ratio.................1 ounce in 100 gallons vs 2 ounces in 20 for 44k.

The gasoline after BG44k contains 10 times the amount of detergent, compared to most premium gasolines.

"In a broad embodiment of the fuel composition of the present invention, the concentration of the additive is about 25 to about 175 PTB (pounds per thousand barrels of gasoline base stock). In a preferred embodiment, the concentration of the additive composition is about 50 to about 150 PTB. In a more preferred embodiment, the concentration of the additive composition is about 75-125 PTB.

75-125 pound per 252,000 pounds of gasoline base stock

In theory one could vacuum evaporate the carrier solvents in BG44k and all the other so called additives and weigh the amount of detergents remaining."Thus, at 295° C., 80 to 90 percent of the additive had thermally decomposed and volatilized. This indicates that the additive should leave only small amounts of combustion chamber deposits during actual engine operation. ......a sample of the present additives was analyzed for rate of thermal decomposition using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Specific procedure is the Chevron test method which involves heating of materials in air at a rapid rate and measuring volatility of materials at 200° C. and 295° C. The following results were obtained at the different temperatures for the polyetherpropane diamine described above.

A job for a good forensic chemist to determine how much you are paying per gram.

At the refinery they are spending less than a penny a gallon [unless they forget or run out of detergent that batch]...........the nice thing is that at the tank farm multiple batches are received and mixed together while the transport water settles out and gets drained off. Thus a mistake here and there gets fixed by the blending....maybe.

Unless one wants to buy and ship 55 gallons [$1000+ worth of detergent] probably enough to last 500 years= treat 800,000 gallons

A nice 107 page report on fuel additives: A working paper on whether , type , and how much additives should be used in EU to fix gasoline

http://forum.europa.eu.int/Pub..._&a=d

What top tier really means is discussed!

Top tier PROHIBITS metallics which are found in octane boosters as they form serious combustion chamber deposits that the detergents cannot clean!

Additives that work with current injectors have problem with direct injection and the converse..................this may be a serious problem in future..................as additive package must fit final use [type of engine].

Additive that work with ethanolized may not be optimum for conventional non ethanolized.
