It was $1.50 a quart cheaper for fully synthetic Coastal 10/30 than Mobil One so I bought some. According to their website they claim, "Coastal® Synthetic Blend Motor Oils are licensed for API SJ and meet the European CCMC G4 requirement. Coastal® Synthetic Blend 10W-30 Motor Oil is ILSAC GF-2 approved." (Mine is fully syn but they don't have that on the site) I'm running it right now. Opinions?

New oil? Your oil may be old stock from several years ago. The latest oils have API spec SL. It is still good-just not the latest and greatest.

Assuming .ro means Romania, Ploeisti has been in the synthetic oil business for a long time. It was a big target for U.S. bombers during WWII since they produced synthetic oil for the Germans.

Nothing wrong with that oil.

If they call it synthetic, it's at least a group III.Probably a pretty good buy.

As for the SJ vs SL , yes SL is a more rigorous spec but synthetics (even group III) in a SJ generally needed little or no formulation change to meet SL (unlike the switch from SH to SJ).

It's only as of recently that most bottles read SL (even tho the spec is 2k1), many bottles are out there (especially among syns) that still read SJ and meet SL.

Whew, that's a bit of a load off my mind. Thanks. I'll let the membership know how it goes with this oil. A factor in my decision was that Mobile One is reputed not to have much detergent quality. I don't know if this Coastal product has more but I was considering a change anyways. Now I'll have to see how my seals hold up.

There are some very popular brands that sell for higher that average prices, based on their advertising of quality and engine durability.

There are other brands that do not have costly advertising programs that sell at much lower prices.

Remember, the API specs are the minimum acceptable levels of performance required by th eengine manufacturers.

Sometimes compromises in oil performance requirements are 'forced' because a oil performance level that is truly satisfying cannot be made 'widely available' due to limitation in additive and/or base oil supplies. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that car manufacturere cannot force the buyer to buy oil from the dealer to keep the warranty in force unless they can show that theirs is special. The car manufacturers will not face the certain barrage of bad press that would cause (who wants to take on Exxon? or BP?

Recommendation: Always buy oil that 'exceeds' the (minimum)requirements. Remember car companies want them to run well and last through warranty, then die instantly.
