I decided to try something different the other day - Using the VHT Nite Shade tail light tint, I did the upper half of my m35's tail lights, and finished the edge off with a black styling stripe wrapped around the edge of the lights. I think it gives the M a much more refined look. Thoughts? Opinions?

Looks good, well done. The taillights look kinda lexus-ey and follow the lInes well. However it seems like there's a little too much rear to light ratio...or that the trunk can be lowered to catch up with the taillight level.
Strange as it is, I like the earlier models because of the large, bold, in-your-face taillights.

Why???? You got an 06-07 not 08+.
If anything you should of blacked out the red lens and keep the turn signal and reverse white since you got a black car.
As long as you like it, good job tho.

Not my cup of tea either. The taillights aren't my favorite thing about these cars, too big IMO, but I haven't figured out how I would approach modding them personally yet.

I actually think the stock tails are just perfect.

I think these are the kind of lights that don't need modding. I don't usually say this, but I also think they're perfect. The light output is great and they have a lot of presence at night, the LEDs sure do help.

Slightly off topic: I remember when I tinted the taillights of my maxima years back. Some cops gave me trouble claiming it was illegal and unsafe. Of course sometimes people go overboard, but IMO light tint makes your car safer. If the car in front of you has red lenses + brakes + turn signals, it might be a little hard to catch that stuff during the day. But if the lens was covered in black and suddenly turned red/ amber...then that catches your attention.

+1^^^ I love my taillights! Even with the age on our cars they still look better than most. The design still holds up IMO.

Yeah I would say the technology in them is still pretty current compared to what is out there.

I am curious how that niteshades holds up though. Every other car I have seen that stuff used on and the tint ends up looking purple rather quickly. The only way I have seen taillights tinted successfully without any negative side effects (besides less light output of course) is when they are professionally spray tinted and clear coated. The tint film way is terrible as well, especially in Arizona here, because the glue has a negative effect on the plastic and actually makes the plastic melt so to speak, and then the lenses look dented in.

I used spray tint with automotive-grade clearcoat, and even though it's only been a couple weeks since I did them, they are holding up well in this California heat. I will make sure to keep a coat of headlight/taillight lens sealer on them, but as far as I can tell this stuff is pretty durable.

+1 on M35 tail lights being perfect as stock. It's wierd, I actually like staring at the lights when I'm behind another M. Off the top of my head no other car has it beat...or cool enough for me to really take notice. Yeah, this is a no go for me.

As for painting over the reverse lamps ..... definitely NOT! You have significantly reduced your visibility behind your car and now you will see only the side view in your mirror (on one side only). You can no longer clearly see the tree stump or anything else that is high enough to damage your car, but too low to see through the rear windscreen. The rear tail lamps can not illuminate well enough for a clear rear-view of your path in situations where there are no street lamps, etc. I don't know laws in all 50 of these states, but it is safe to assume that rear back-up lamps are required by law - else they would not be on every car made.

As for tinting .... I say do the entire lens including the trunk pieces, or nothing. That way it looks uniform and OEM instead of 'tinkered with'. Have a squinz at the pics in my sig. I had an 07 black M and did what I consider to be a brilliant design on my rear lamps. I used VHT to make them a dark cherry red (including the trunk pieces) that still allowed reflection in sunlight). I also did a unique design on the turn indicators giving them strips of amber instead of one large lens. My present M is pearl white so I just did the dark cherry tint with VHT (on the lens, the turn and reverse indicator and the trunk pieces), The slanted strips on the turn indicator would not look good with any color aside from dark grey or black.

I agree on the tail pipe. Fart box mufflers have no place on these cars.

Update: The look started to wear off on me, and I began to agree with what the other members were saying. Some goof-off takes the tint right off, and I went with "redding out" the reverse lights and only aerosal tinting the turn signals so they are pretty black but still visible enough when signalling. Any thoughts on this look?

Still no - I'd say black out the trunk piece too.
