There seems to be a slight ticking from my motor..It has not gotten worse over the past week from what i can tell....Is it common for sr20's to have a slight ticking sound to them?( not the injectors ) and if not what could be causing this?

how fast is your ticking? Where is it coming from? If the clicking is not so fast and coming from the top of the valve cover, its probably your injectors.

Its not common for SR engines to be layed on its side before the supplier ships it out and air gets to the lifers this way.

If you want to bleed them, you have to take the cams off and the rocker arms off.

the ticking goes faster as i rev the motor a little.but it does not sound like i spun a rod bearing.

I could be wrong though

Yes SR's tick naturally but the sound is elevated when the oil is thinning. That helped with my ticking. That is until it started back about 4 months later when my timing chain was dying . Pray my friend, pray.

its funny you mention the timing chain...I just took the guide off of mine because it started to make noise.............I will pray...very damn hard that its nothing serious....ill try ading a little more oil. Maybe that will help, that or maybe a higher weight...im using 10-30 right now

bleeding procedure for the lifters is a PITA. you gotta pull the rockers, which means you pretty much pull the cams off. Then you pull each HLA out, submerge it in oil, and use something to push the plunger down to release what little bit of air is in it. Then put it back in without getting it tilted on its side, and hope that that does the trick. Bleeding them doesn't necessarily mean you get them to stop ticking. Freaking annoying.

Now, what I would do is try to listen for exactly where your tick is coming from. If it sounds like it's the front of the motor, like out of the chain cover, could be an old chain or a worn out tensioner. Remember these motors are old junkyard motors, so don't expetc them to be in the best of shape mechanically speaking.

If it's valve cover, it's probably the HLAs. And you would know if you spun a rod bearing. It doesn't tick, it KNOCKS.

And for VA, 10-30 is fine, but I generally use 15-50 for the spring/summer/fall time of years. I can get away with the weight for winter, but I've just grown accustomed to swapping out for 10-30 when winter hits.

I have not come across one so far since I have moved to VA....I live right in lynchburg so the trip would only be only like an hour.........Id like to get to a dyno and see what im putting down. And have someone figgure out why I am hesitating a little.(yes i cleaned the maf, and bought new spark plugs)

on SRs, rod knocks sound like valve train rattle. Ive heard so many SRs rattle that I swore up and down came from the vavle train but they were all rod knocks.

Now Im not saying you have a rod knock. If it sounds more like a tick rather than a rattle it prob is just lifter problem.

Anyways like he said you need to pull the cams off but it really isnt that hard. Bleeding the lifters only take few minutes when you have the cams off.

I took the lower oil pan off. You will usually find brass materail in your oil pan if your bearings are gone.
